3rd Universal Taipei Open | WNT Ranking Event

I disagree that Roda is better than Biado but he’s definitely on the come up!
Biado is still better, but he has been very inconsistent. He had one of his worst years in 2023, though he really bounced back this year. Said he’s been practicing more and working out.

Guess he wants to keep up with the young Pinoy guns!

Biado has been the best player over his career. No doubt, sjm.

But Chua is better right now imo. He has surpassed Biado in the past 12 months.

Highly debatable? Yes. In fact, I’d give Biado the nod in 10 ball.

Yet I have watched dozens of matches of both players in the past two years. A year ago, I would have said Biado. Not now. He has one increasing flaw in his game. He struggles more than other top players with long shots.

Chua is at the top of his game now. We’ll see if he can sustain it.

I am surprised you used the watered-down field argument. You don’t usually like that argument I seem to recall.

In any case it was still a strong field. Chua also finished third at the world pool championship and second at the UK open. Both extremely strong fields.
Yes, I don't like the watered-down argument and Chua's title is a major in every respect, but it will mean more if he is able to beat a field that has all the most elite players in it such as the 2024 World 10ball.

No question, he's on the rise and rates as elite, but he'll have to win a few more significant titles to be in the conversation with Biado, who has had the better career and who had the better year in 2024. Biado also contributed more to Team Asia at the 2024 Reyes Cup than Chua.

Let's defer the debate and see who outperforms who in 2025. FYI, I do enjoy watching Chua.

Let’s defer indeed.

Btw, Chua is 6th in the WNT rankings vs 18th for Biado. Twice as much earnings as Biado, too. About $130,000 in 2024.

Yet if you throw in WPA and other events, Biado’s success looks a lot better. Almost 210,000 ($60,000 plus in WNT events) in earnings. His best year ever by far.

The caveat being he travels more and Chua boycotted some WPA events.

Nice post. Of course, participation is a foundational element for greatness. Filipino greats that came before Chua like Reyes, Bustamante, Parica, Orcullo, Biado and Pagulayan were all globetrotters on the tournament trail and Chua will likely have to follow their lead and make the sacrifices they made if he is to reach the very highest level.

They just keep 'em coming out of the Philippines! Never heard of this guy a year ago and now he is playing on the highest level. There's few others over here on the rise including a 17 year old (Ren DeVera, spellcheck on that name) who is whipping them up in the cash games.

Like it or not, feuds or whatever, the rise of pro pool internationally cannot be denied. What was once primarily an American dominated sport 25-30 years ago is now a truly worldwide phenomena with many great players coming out of Europe and Asia. The organizations that govern this sport and produce the events are still trying to catch up with the abundance of talent available and the interest in pool worldwide. The market is there if they can figure out how to tap into it. So far Matchroom has a big heads up in this department. They have a track record of success building other sports and know how to tap into the burgeoning market for pro pool. Barry Hearn had the intuition and insight years ago that this was possible and now his son and crew are following through in his footsteps. Thank you Sir Barry!

Chua is the Skyler Woodward of the Philippines a "family man" as Jeremy Jones has referred to both. Got married around covid, had kids and didn't travel much while they were very young.

Naturally Chua's game suffered. (Johan Ruysink told Doggin it last week the same is true of Sky).

All those other Filipinos greats basically camped out in the U.S./North America for months, even years, at a time (in the case of the evicted Orcullo).

Doubt Chua will do the same.

Biado, on the other hand, was urged by his wife to hang out in the U.S. in 2021. He didn't want to go, he said later, but big opportunities had dried up in Asia following covid.

He moved to the States four months before the 2021 US Open and played a bunch of tourneys in Louisiana, Texas, Vegas, California and Arizona. Then he won the U.S. Open to mark his second major title (WPC in 2017 was the other).

Chua and Biado are cousins, by the way. Biado is also the godfather to one of Chua's kids.

Who woulda thunk that Big Ko could lose to a guy who uses a magnetic chalk holder like he’s in the APA…must be a Roada player.

Guess that's a win for players like me. I use one too, Dr Vs. Only one I've used that I think is worth using.

Works great and keeps me from forgetting to take my chalk with me!

are they really? i thought biado was related to chua's wife. i think chua is part chinese
Chua said in an interview with MR in Hanoi that he and Biado were cousins. It is possible that I misheard and he said Biado and his wife were cousins. Or he may have omitted that part.

The interview took place right before he played and beat Biado in semifinals of the Hanoi Open.

Chua also mentioned his relationship with Carlo in interviews during the Reyes Cup.

Love seeing a 9-on-the-snap for the win. Adds excitement to the game. 10b would be a better game if 10b early wins. 10b last is a boring thing to play/watch.
