4 point forearm with Veneers

I love the Szamboti forearm video on YOUTUBE, in which it shows his "assembled" forearm before being turned on a lathe.

Question(s): What tools does he use to build that initial "assembly" and would a cuemaker have a dedicated lathe just for cutting down that forearm?

Is that a lengthy process and how long would it be preferably to let the forearm sit/hang between passes?

Just generally curious.

Thanks,
Matt

I think Gus used a Radial Arm Saw to cut his forearm grooves. There are many ways to make the parts that glue into the forearm. It can be done with saws, routers, sanders, jointers and who knows how many other ways. As far as how long someone should let things hang between passes, you will get almost as many different answers as you have cuemakers. I prefer to age stuff months between turns. But I have sped that up to a couple of weeks between passes at times with success also. By "success" I mean it did not warp later.

gus and barry cut their points into a square forearm. they are unique for that bc i dont know of any other makers that do points like that. i woulsnt even try it. barry made most of the forearms in gus' cues before he was making his own cues and most of the blanks

Where did you hear Barry made forearms for Gus?

I've been building my cues like that for 10+ years.

This is the first time I've ever read or heard this. Not saying it's not true, but very interesting information.

It's really not much harder of a way......you just need a little more patience.
I just, this year, built an indexing fixture for some new designs in the works.

I also have to agree Dale, because from what I have been told he didn't make forearms until after Gus had passed away.

i was told that barry work in dads shop as a teenager and made many od the blanks for gus' cues. i could be wrong. thats just what i was told maybe i got bad info
