Day 2 Texas Open 2013
Taking care of Bid-ness

By Mike “Tiger”

I missed some of the early matches, and I arrived in time to see some good ones on the elimination side. It was a lot cooler on that side. Many of the players were complaining how hot the pool hall is. I spoke to Charlie Bryant, the Hillybilly, and he said it was too hot for the HillyBilly. Hey someone could really clean-up with a cold-towel business in here. They give us cold-towels on some of the better golf-courses on hot days.

I heard that Al Mason was three-sheets-to-the-wind, but took care of bid-ness 9-3 with James “Bastrop” Davis Sr. which JP said was one of the best matches of the tournament.

Left-hand shooting Destry Ensley, San Antonio, took care of tournament director Bill Fuller on Table 10. Destry was up 8-5 and Bill tries for a tough 5-9 combo, then Destry sat up one of the best runs I have seen to take care of bid-ness. DI was hooked on the 5-ball and banked the cue-ball off the side-rail to make the 5b in the side-pocket. The 8-9 was tied up on the side rail near the corner pocket and the six was on the side-rail. DE studies the 6b and has to play a cut with high English to throw the cue-ball three rails to kiss the 9 for the shot on the 8. It was a tremendous shot and he still had a little trouble for the 9 shape, but he throws the cue-ball 2 rails off the corner and slides by the 9 for a straight-in corner shot. Destry was eliminated 9-3 in his next match by P Warren.

Skinny Bob regular Brian Sanders battled Shawn Downs on Table 11. 9-ball combos, heat and distractions could have been a factor.

Hill-Hill BS makes 4b on break and p[lays a successful safety on 1b and gets ball-in hand. BS runs to the 5b and leaves himself a tough cut down side-rail on 5b to corner pocket and barely misses. SD runs out. Shawn Downs wins and makes a great come from behind win. Brian gave it away but put on a good show for the small group of us on the grand stands.
Shawn won his next match against Tommy Mooney and faces S Owen Monday.

Austin local Doctor Bill Hyde played Kiel Perry (Houston) on Table 10. I mistakenly called him Hal in an earlier post. Kiel plays with an OB1-shaft and a Predator butt shaft. Unfortunately it wasn’t working for him as he fouled on at least 3 tough thin cuts he should not have missed and Bill played his amazing safeties to win 9-3. Bill lost to G. Rojas in his next match 9-4.

In the Saturday 2PM matches, I watched Chris Baggett (Port Lavaca) versus Grady Cooper.

7-4 CB scratches on 4b in corner pocket. GC looks at the 5-9 combo and misses. CB plays 5b safe. GC misses 5b. CB runs to 7b and tries a end rail bank to 9b combo in corner pocket and misses. GC misses 7b and concedes 9b.
8-4 CB makes 3b and 7b on break. CB plays safe on 1b. GC misses 1b. CB runs to 4b and leaves GC bank on 4b in side-pocket but misses 5b down rail to corner pocket. Chris Baggett takes care of bidness with win.
Chris wins his next match 9-7 against F Ferrerr Jr and faces Gordon Vanderveer next.

Ed Ambrose makes short work of local Mike Ramirez on table 10. Ed makes some crazy shots including an impossible 3-9 combo to go up 4-1. Ed plays more wild shots but Mike just can’t get into stroke as he misses two shots with Ball in hand! Mike gets lucky when Ed misses some 8b shots and wins 2 more games, but Ed was too intimidating and wins 9-3. Ed lost 9-2 in his next match versus J Krone.

Watched Martin Salinas make an amazing come-back to take care of bidness versus Eduardo Bayaua on table 14.
Down Hill-6 MS makes a great cue-ball bank off the end rail to kick the 8b into corner pocket. Gets out.

Sunday 3PM matches.
Skinny Bob regular sweetheart Kim Pierce faced hot shot Vivian “Texas Tornado” Villareal on Table 9 in a race to seven. Kim runs out from the 3b to tie the match 1-1 but Vivian wins the next 5 in a row and Kim only gets to the table 1 time in each game including a 9b miss in game 6. Kim is down Hill-1 but makes a good run-out to slide her second ball on her side of the wire; that 1st ball was lonely for a long time.  Kim scratches on the break and Vivian runs to 4b and leaves a tough bank. Kim makes a great 4b bank to side-pocket and runs to 8b and misses the bank to the side pocket and leaves Vivian an easy shot. Kim throws in the yellow towel which gets a big laugh from the small crowd. Vivian gets Kim Sanders in the next round and Kim takes on Julia Rapp on the elimination side.

Watched local George Smith take on his friend Jacob Warriner on Table 11.
George gave some games away but he had his chances as Jacob’s medium hard break just wasn’t working and the cue-ball jumps off the table on the break at least 3 times so he had to change to the soft break which almost backfired. Jacob takes care of bidness anyway and wins 9-3 but loses 9-5 to C. Flud in the next match.

Adrian Lloyd plays Al Mason on Table 7 in Round 3 winners side.
6-5 AL misses 1b, AM misses 1b corner. AL runs out.
6-6 AL gets nada on break and AM runs out.
AM wins 9-7. Beats Shawn Putnam 9-8 in an unfriendly match on Table 11. On Hill-Hill, Al resets the scoring wire and Shawn moves them back to show the score. Shawn reluctantly shakes Al’s hand. No one in the crowd cheers for Little Al even though he breaks and runs out the last game. There is some bad blood there.
Mason loses the Charlie and is kicked to Elimination side where Chip Compton gets it 9-3.
Adrian is eliminated by last year runner-up Joey Gray 9-6.

Chris Baggett (Port Lavaca) plays D. Weinhiemer (Dallas Area), the curly hair dude, on the TV table. DW plays strong and makes few mistakes and eliminates Chris 9-5.
Weinhiemer loses to E. Bullard in next match 9-7.

Somewhere in this important match, the ladies had to stop for the drawing of the raffle cue. That could have affected the ladies concentration and altered the flow of the game. Louis, John and Rich are taking turns nodding off trying to fight the sand man. Lights, Camera, Action – No wait, Ray has the camera on table 4 watching the men’s finals. Vivian is watching me write down every shot and is counting the people who are watching her. I see where she gets her name the Texas Tornado, she wastes no time on her shots, I barely have time to write anything down.

I really feel sorry for you ladies because there were about 50 people in there and I doubt if 5 of them were watching you play your hearts out. Skinny Bob’s should have featured you guys and waited to play the men’s finals. Yeah, like that’s gonna happen. As soon as the Men’s finals were over, all h*ll broke loose in there.

Mike Tiger is done for 2013.
