You need the right angle or it is a scratch, at least it is for me.
There's a YouTube video that was mentioned here (I think) in which a player in the European championships broke the head ball into the side pocket on the opening break. He played it softly with a relatively thin cut.
Ray Martin's book shows at least 3 different ways to make a ball from the full pack, including from the top, the side, and from underneath. most of them can be gotten up to the 40% level with very little practice. i've not tried really working hard on them, but they sure are useful to know in a high run attempt.
I'd never shoot it in a game but Max Eberle shot two of these on me in the same game (not gambling...) on the 5'x10' at Best Billiards in Las Vegas. He made both of them. First one was the opening break and he only ran a 36 or something on that one. the next one was on a safe i played on him up table but i didn't get him on the rail. he banked that ball and ran a 50+ ...Needless to say I lost the game to 150 by 100 or more...
