Does anyone know where I can get joint protectors made for a 5/16-14 Acme joint like Bill Stroud used for a while? I have been looking for quite a while and had no luck. Michael Webb even helped me and struck out also!

And, yes, I have asked Bill where to get them. The person he recommended passed away.

When I needed difficult JP's, he was able to work with me (sent a blank for me to mark/make comments). He makes these specifically to address his customer's needs and ebay, they aren't left-over seconds from other orders like some you see on ebay that appear nice at first glance.

Oh, please Mike. I appreciate the effort. This cue was made in 1987 and I've been looking for JP's since then!

I do know that Tim Scruggs has used the 5/16x14 ACME joint pin also. Have you contacted him to ask for joint protectors? He may have them or know where to get them. I hope this helps.

According to the 14th edition of the handbook my grandfather used,printed in 1951,the correct major diameter of this thread is .3089-.3125,assuming a class 2G fit,which is the national standard for this particular thread. The 27th edition I bought a year ago has the exact same number,so the tolerances have not changed in 50 years. The only reason I can think of that someone cannot make you a set of joint protectors for this cue is the tap for the female end might be prohibitively expensive,I found one at e-taps.com that was 73.00. Mr. Scruggs used a 3/8X10 acme in the past, The pin is actually over .320 O.D.. I have the tap so the inserts are not the problem. Some day the order I placed for the pins will get filled, I want them in stock in case I have to repair an older Josswest and keep it original.

My Scruggs has the 3/8-10 Acme thread and I contacted Mr. Scruggs and asked for wooden JP's but he says he has plastic only.

Could you make a set of of nice wooden JP's for my (beloved) Scruggs, Mr. Webb ? My shafts don't have JP's at all and maybe I'm just vain but I'd like to know if I can get nice wooden JP's somewhere.

Tommy-D, I have a pic of the screw. But, to see the detail I will have to email it to you. The pic is too big to post here and when I shrink it, you cannot see the threads very well. While the screw dimensions may not be that uncommon in theory, in practice you don't see them in a cue application. Even if I could locate the screws, someone would have to have/buy the tap for the female piece to make the protectors. Not very cost efficient for a few sets of protectors, I guess.

Maybe Lucky has a set I could buy for $1k or so! :p

The shop he worked for before becoming a teacher,according to him,has a selection of taps that might be unrivaled,he said they had 4 56" Snap-On cabinets filled top to bottom with oddball sizes ranging from so small they can only be used on eyeglass frames,to some over 3". He said he would look into it,then recommended calling Widell and seeing if they might have it in stock in case he can't find one. If I can find the tap,making a simple,solid wood,phenolic or delrin set of 3 won't be a problem,there is no doubt in my mind I can either make the screws manually,or have my instructor Jeff CNC one. If I make it myself,I'll make it long enough for you to get what need for 2 male protectors,plus enough I can make a lathe pin for this size. My email is tommyd42069@yahoo.com. Tommy D.

If you can have the pins made, I will gladly supply the brass inserts seeing I have the tap. No charge for Scott.

Tommy-D - I'm sure this screw is 5/16-14.

I was contacted by someone outside of AzB that can make them for me and I'm working with him. :)
