I have this old Schon with 5/16 14 threads, and I have tried a newer Joss 5/16 14 shaft, and it only went 2 or 3 threads and it stopped. I tried a newer Schon shaft the other day, and it fit just like the original. ??? What gives? I thought Schon and Joss used the exact same thread pattern?

The pitch of the pins/insert are a little different, even though they are both 5/16-14. I agree with Dave. Run a tap through the insert and it will fix the problem.
 
ive looked for a tap for that thread size, and the only one ive found was some tool website, and they wanted 81.00 for one tap. I think I'll see if my local pool hall has any...

5/16-14 is an industry specific thread type. You will not find too many outside of the pool world. Send the cue and shaft to me and I will run a tap through for no charge. Just pay S+H.

thanks Ryan, I just may do that. I wish you would have told me that sooner, you could have just put the cue in the new case I just bought from Meullers and returned it, lol. If you do that, will it still fit a Joss? I am suppose to be getting a Joss cue, and I would like to use either shaft on either cue. thanks again.

I got a new Joss shaft for my Joss SP break cue once,and the insert was too tight for both my Joss AND my Schon. In my experience,Schon is much more consistent with the fitting of their inserts,even though Evan has been known to experiment with his pin threads in order to make it harder for other cuemakers to replicate the same quality of fit.

I've never even heard of a 5/16-14 tap with different H limits for size and thread fit,so indeed a standard tap ran back and forth about twice should make it fit. Tommy D.

You're right. They don't make a tap that size, you have to have one made. Schons are like .006 or.008 smaller than a normal, run of the mill 5/16 X 14. If you run a standard 5/16 X 14 tap into a Schon shaft it will fit very loosely from that time on. Mike Webb has the exact size and of coarse, the correct tap.

yepper!!!be better off getting an aftermarket shaft to switch around and leave the originals alone
