5x10 VS smaller tables 14.1

sometimes mosconi brought his own balls sometimes he didnt. when i played him he didnt. he played with the house balls.
and did not clean them although the house wiped them off before they brought them out. and mosconi didnt clean the cue ball either at any time. he ran a hundred or so and just put his cue away with easy shots left on the table.
 
People are focusing mostly on table size.
That 309 with the nappy cloth and clay balls could've been hundreds higher on today's Diamond Big Foot with Simonis 860 and Phenolic balls.
I vote for the 309.

The story I have heard is that the 8 footer was the only Brunswick table in the room.
Willie had to play on a Brunswick per contract and thats why it was an 8 footer.
You know there could be some old guy in his 80's somewhere that was there.
You never know.

I played him in '64 and I dont remember if they were house balls or not.
It was a brand new room so the balls were not beat up.
The only thing that got beat up was me.
He ran 85 perfect balls and out.
Stopped the run and did his trick shot show.

This is a really cool story, wow. Can't even imagine the skill needed to run 100+ and just walk away cool as a cucumber.

I don't hear many (any)stories about Mosconi complaining/crying non stop for years about an unfair skid ending a big run.

I'm rather resigned to the notion people aren't as tough/hearty today as they were of his generation.
 
Speaking of 5x10 I watched this match last night which accustats just released. This is how the game is supposed to be played.

He was from the great depression generation.
Hardship was every day.
Every generation after that life got easier and better
Making todays generation much softer, they freak out if their latte from Starbucks is not prepared correctly.
 
mosconi was a big complainer . he got mad if the person he was playing made a bunch of balls.
on tv or tournaments he didnt complain much but outside of that he wined about everything.

I don't know about the 7' being the easiest. My average on 7' valley and 9' brunswick tables is very similar, but on my buddy's 8' Olhausen it's a bit higher. I think the 8' is ideal for straight pool; not too many long shots, but not nearly the crowding problem you get on a 7 footer. Right in the sweet spot.
