6 ball on a 9 footer. What's your thoughts.

I played 6 ball tonight for about 3 hours on a tight 9 footer with lightening fast Simonis cloth. What's your opinions on this? Is it silly to play 6 ball on a big table? Personally, I enjoy it.

I managed to win a few bucks but overall I didn't play very well. Mostly due to the fast conditions.

6-ball is a fun game for two d-c players for low stakes. C+ it's run-out city most of the time. It's a very good game to tighten up your position for 9-ball and have a little action while doing it...imo. Johnnyt

hey hal

hal have you ever played 8ball express? 4 solids 4 stripes and the 8 in the middle! great game, alot of fun and it pumps up my ego, as i can say i ran 6 racks in a row! lol:D

I'm ashamed to admit how many full racks I ran during the 3 hours. It wasn't many.

Never tried it competitively, Hal, but why not? For C players, it's a lot like 9 ball is for A players, I suppose.

I used to play the 6 ball ghost a fair amount, mutting around. Then I beat it 6 out of 7 one day and figured it was a sign from on high that I was primed for the 9 ball version. Eh ... looks like I still need at least 5 on the wire in a race to 9. :o

Maybe you shouldn't have jumped over the 7-ball ghost to 9-ball. Maybe you need to work on that for awhile until you run a 6 pack. Johnnyt

I agree completely with this. When I was practicing against the ghost, I found that I was the favorite against the 6 ball ghost; however, playing the 7 ball ghost things changed entirely and I was no longer the favorite to get out or win a race to 7.

One of the major differences I think was the break. Adding the extra ball at the back of the rack made it much more difficult to get the proper spread.

I haven't tried it in a while and feel like I am playing much better, so maybe I will give it another try this weekend.

I'm sure you're right about taking too big a jump. Guess I'm a sucker for games that are easy to rack. Absolutely tortured the 3- and 4-ball ghosts before I beat 6 ball, but skipped the 5.:D

Six-ball is about 5% easier than 9-ball. On a really tight 9-foot table it's not that easy to shoot an 856 and beat the 6-ball ghost consistently. You have to make the same shots as in 9-ball, just slightly less consistently. If you're not a lock to win at 9-ball you're probably not a lock to win at 6. C players are unlikely to ever win a five ahead set on my table.

I grew up playing sixball on nine footers and it is good fast action untill I played the Coach with him giving me the 4 and 5, I shot twice and won one game out of twelve for twenty a game.

I agree. I can run 6 balls consistently but the 9 ball rack gives me fits. Unless I break well.

Sounds like fun, 6-ball on a tournament table, count me in!

I think 9-ball, by the current rules, is a bit of a joke so anything less than that, like 7-ball or 6-ball, is an even bigger joke. I guess those games are fun if you just want to see what it feels like to get out every single time you have a shot. 6-ball is also a nice gaff game if you want to give up what seems to be weight by offering something-and-the-break since balls have the tendency not to drop on the break in 6-ball. But, there you have it. Its only practical purpose is to trap people in a gaff game.

isn't 6-ball (payball) usually played on a snooker table?

the way I played it growing up. It is just too easy on a Pool table, IMO.
Even more challenging to use Pool balls on a Snooker table.

Six-ball is a good game on a nine-footer for two D or C players to gamble on. It's a stepping stone on the way up to nine-ball and it gives them confidence when they start to run-out the six. Pluse they get more bang for their buck in table time. Johnnyt

I still think one of the best ways to get better at almost any pool game is to play a lot of call shot rotation. Johnnyt
