Im looking for a 8" 6 jaw chuck for my Clausing, without breaking the bank ;) I know Bison and Buck are nice, but I cant afford to buy one of those right now.
Anyone have any suggestions? I see a import one on Ebay for around $140 but not sure if they are any decent.
Anyone have anything for sale, PM me?

You will have to bite it on this one.
Bison chucks have gone way up. Maybe by $200-300 in 7 years. They are made in Poland if that has anything to do with it .
Set Tru is the only way to imo. You are looking at 1$800-$1000 with the backplate.

Go with one that has four adjusting screws to set it or you're wasting your time and time is money and unless you have a tree out back it's a terrible thing to waste.

A few ways to save a buck

Yeah there are set-tru Chinese clones out there, and you can save maybe 40%. Quality?
You may also consider getting a 6 inch chuck? It has a thru hole about 1.5 inch, plenty for cue work? Though maybe you want the larger hole of an 8 inch chuck? But a 6 inch is usually cheaper.
And of course you can buy the non adjustable chuck for $140 which you mentioned and just bore out the jaws to hold the most common size, say 1.375 inch and then use precise delrin collets with the OD at 1.375. A bit more of your time to make all the collets, and bore the jaws, but it will be quite workable. I use a bored 3 jaw, with replaceable aluminum jaws and have no complaints. It runs very true. But I use it at the opening size I bored it for when I want the most precision.
But if I had my druthers I would buy a set-tru, Bison, BuckChuck, or other quality adjustable mount 6 jaw chuck. But remember they are most accurate at only the jaw opening they were calibrated and adjusted for.

Lol. You are right. I was looking at the thread on my IPhone and looked like he had a 1 before the 8 (You are looking at 1$800-$1000 with the backplate.). My bad Joey :), sorry.
You are right on the money prices have being going up.

Trent, who the hell told you I could not instal a joint pin? Who the hell told you that I am Mr. Know everything?
You got a problem? You can call me anytime... My number is public and I don't hide behind a keyboard and my shop is open...
Guess what... I just got a brand new R&P CNC that I am finishing putting together...
Hell, what do I know about cues? Nothing... I am just trying to learn everyday. The CNC might not be super accurate to do Black Boar inlay caliber work but will be able to do tapering. I know the footprint is big and overkill but it can do a lot of stuff.

You just can't call out people for no reason...
The only thing I am getting help right now on my cues is with my finish until I have my spraying booth done... Everything else on my cues I do it... See? I have balls to say the truth. Nothing wrong with that.
You have a problem? Either send me a pm or call me... You must really have some good friends advising you...
My number is 209-482-7768 and it is public.

BTW, are you pissed because I am putting comments about stuff I know it works for me? Everybody does things differently and I am no exception. The are many ways to skin a cat.
I take all the advice I can get, put it all together and make my own conclusions...
On the construction methods I learned a bit from everybody's methods and made my own...
The good thing is, I do not do this for a living... I can take my time.
I learn and try apply all I can on my stuff, so what is your problem with me?
Trent, I try to respect everybody and I've always respected you, but you are going overboard with me...

There are a few on ebay right now. Good deals can be had, but only if you are patient. I was thinking about bidding on the new one that is at 350....

I got new Set-Tru on Ebay for 450 IIRC. I DID pay 200 for the damn back plate though.

I also have A Pratt 6 Jaw that I got for 400 that is sitting around here somewhere. It still needs a backplate. Maybe I'll see if the Grizzly will work....

BTW, there was a L00 backplate as well on there, which I think is the proper one for your Clausing.

Not trying to be a dick or anything, but out of curiosity, how do you know that the machine has 0 backlash? It looks like it hasn't been hooked up.

I ask because theoretically, my machine should have 0 backlash, but it still has a few tenths.

It's easy.
Just go to your MACH 3 setting and set the backlash compensation.
I heard your Kerk leadscrews cost more than your car.:D

That cnc looks huge. Looks like 4 by 4 sign maker.
You can set stations in there.

On the construction methods I have a bit of everybody's methods... A bit of Bob Dzuricky, a bit of Eric Crisp, a bit of my own ideas, a bit of Southwest, a bit of Searing, a bit of Leon Sly, a bit of Dennis Dieckman, a bit of Pete Omen, etc, etc... The end work is starting to show up... I have done 5 cues, 7 more in the process and I have 16 back orders right now. The good thing is, I do not do this for a living... I can take my time.

Nice Cabinet maker there,,,,,,, wow nice.

seriously you have called everyone under the sun to figure out "your process" been nothing but an annoyance to other cue makers who have better shit to do than talk to you all ****ing day while you pick their brains and then say you have it figured out. :withstupid:

Sorry OP didnt mean to jack your thread a 6 jaw would be a great upgrade:thumbup:

Benefica, Guerra whatever your name is, this quarter your really not worth the time why do you think i blew you off the day you called???

Nice try Trent. Go back to work on your Schmelke blanks.

Getting back to the thread, Bison is a good chuck for the price. Quite a few cuemakers use it.

Let me also suggest a 6" instead of an 8. Why do you think you need 8?

And BTW, if you REALLY want 8 you can plan on spending well over a grand by the time you are done.

For the record. I am the guy who STILL doesn't know how to put a pin in straight!!!! Furthermore, don't bash Shmelke blanks unless you have seen some in person. I like them and feel they are a very good value.

Make sure you use a 3 phase bore tool before you make the threads ;)

What do you mean Nice Try.. He speakes the truth..I know of quite a few cue makers that when they see you # they dont anwser. They know that you are just calling to pick their brain because you dont want to take the time to figure it out for yourself.. You know like the time that you called me to ask if I remembered the exact measurements to set up your taper shaper because you did'nt want to waste any of your precious lumber and experiment on your own..
