Dick played pretty good with the big ball, but I'm guessing Ronnie got there in the end. Was this in Dick's poolroom up there?
Sorry for the late reply, had some logging in issues after being away from the forum.

Ronnie owned a place called Ace Billiards in Vancouver, Billy Werbeniuk and many other good players hung out there. Dick, Tacoma Whitey, Vince Frane used to come up to play.
The last time they played Dick was up about $200 ($909.27 in todays money) when we bailed for breakfast :D

Today, paying cash for a car will get the Feds involved.
Not too many cars cost over the $10k reporting limit back then. I don't think there was a reporting limit back then. I have a friend with a grow operation who said he walked in and bought a new Silverado with $46,000 in cash about six months ago.

Here's some useless trivia.
Back in 1979 When I first started playing I used to sit and watch Dick McGivern and Ronnie Moen play $20 a rack on a bar table big cueball all night long till the sun came up, in todays money that would be $69.54 :D
I wanted to update this thread it would be $76.95/rack as of today in 2021😀. According to a few links on Google. What’s interesting is they were playing for about $10 more per rack in today’s money than 2018 and the original bet was $20/rack. Who says inflation ain’t real? 😳

best,
Fatboy

It was the Lost Cause War on Drugs. That's why there's a $10,000 spending limit with cash. The feds figure anybody you spending that much cash didn't obtain it legally.

Nonsense. I spent 12 years making more than $10K per pay period. I am sure the bank had to report every paycheck, someone at *.gov sees it, someone at IRS sees that it is properly accounted for in 1040, and everyone remains happy. I am also sure they saw every one of my more than $10K mortgage payments, too. They likely saw my purchase of my Mercedes S-600, too. As long as both ends (income and outgo) appear to "add up" nobody in *.gov is going to raise an eyebrow.

On the other hand, the fed should quit the WoD and eliminate the biased laws that program endowed.

Bernie Michelsen was 6.5. He bet Ronnie Moen $100 he was taller. Ronnie stopped slouching and won. Six months later Bernie looked at Ronnie and bet him again. :)

And did you pay with CASH? Theres no freaking way. THATS Nonsense. You paid with checks, or bank transfers, or your accountant did. Only a fool or a criminal would carry that kind of cash around.

I was saying carrying a briefcase full of CASH into a dealership will raise giant red flags.

My Mom and Dad drew $17000 out of their account. The bank tried to climb up their ass. Asking what they need that much cash for. They told the bank to screw off. But they still had to file a federal paperwork trail.

If I ever want to get some cash, I will withdraw from 2,500 to 5,000 several times over a spread out period of time, maybe once every three or four days. You actually can't withdraw 10K over a 24 hour period, so taking out 5K twice in two days will trigger an IRS report. In many banks today, if you want over 2,500 or 3,000, you must let them know ahead of time so they can prepare that much cash for you. I now have high limit ATM cards that allow me to withdraw up to 3K from one of the indoor machines. Using all three cards (for separate bank accounts) I could withdraw 9K at one time, although I never have. NEVER EVER use one of those credit card type ATM's you see in casinos. They charge usurious fees like $50 to withdraw $500 on your credit card. It's legal highway robbery! In fact just about any ATM that is not located in a bank will charge high fees to get money. A $5-6 charge is not unusual, even to withdraw less than $100. So let the buyer beware!

I'm like Mitch above in that I KNOW the feds are aware of my money activities (it's all there on my tax returns), so I make no attempt to hide anything. Why should I, it's all for legit business reasons. In that capacity I have made many deposits, withdrawals and money transfers (never in cash) that are well into six figures (all for real estate transactions). And guess what, I'm still small potatoes compared to the big time movers and shakers on Wall St. and elsewhere, and I know it.

I always wake up in the middle of the night for an hour or two and then go back to sleep for three or four more hours. My excuse is prostate issues. What's yours?

Plenty of law abiding citizens carry large amounts of cash, liquor store owners, gamblers etc. I guess it could be kinda foolish to carry lots of cash with the state of civil asset forfeiture though.

As for the red flag thing the IRS doesn't care anymore because there's too many ways around it. It's really not a big deal. We regularly accept cash payments in excess of 10k. Make purchases and deposits in cash in excess of 10k. File your 8300 form and you're fine. Never been audited or questioned by anyone.

Pay checks and so on have a paper trail. Cash is usually the issue. I have even been questioned by my own bank making large cash deposits.

The teller starts with strange questions and innuendos not really asking where you got the money but fishing for suspisious answers.

I wonder if they get some kind of reward or something. You can tell by the questions they are scripted.
