7 breaks not 107 but....

On the main page a poster posted about how bad their results were from 107 9ball breaks. I haven't played any straights in 6 months so I set up a break ball and played. I made the break ball and split the rack nicely only to have the cueball frozen between 2 balls no shots available., not even multi rail kicks or, gasp , jumps.

I got thru the rack and left a nice break ball. Once again I pocketed the break ball and spread the rack. Had 1 ball I could make but little opportunity for more. Got thru the rack and left a nice break ball. Pocketed the break ball and had a easy cross table bank again with no chance to get on anything else.

So in total i played 7 racks and had a good break ball everytime. I made the break ball everytime. 4 of the 7 i had no shot after the break. 2 breaks left 1shot with no continuing opportunity. 1 break ball to the side pocket gave me such a good spread that I dogged a ball not paying enough attention. I overran position for the last breakball and decided I had enough.

Welcome to my world. You are likely not using a template to rack (like Shaw)😆. When he barges into the pack, they spread like Moses parting the Red Sea. When I do it, they stick to whitey like flypaper.

I find that below the rack break shots can often be more reliable in giving you a shot every time, particularly the three rail variant with inside english. The one railer with outside can be a bit more temperamental and demands a more exact speed. The rack won't be blasted open, so you'll have more work to do, but I rarely end up without a shot with these breakshots.

On more Mosconi type breakshots, if you put some energy into it, you'd be unlucky not to get a shot. I think some people are leaving the breakball too high or too low, and too little angle. If this is the case, you must be more modest in your expectations. With too shallow of an angle, you should use english aggressively in order to get out to the center of the table.

If you have a breakball that is near the center of the stack and a good angle, you hit it good and you don't get a shot, I don't know what to tell you? These things happen sometimes?

I left 1 breakball too close to the stack but the others all were really quite good. I hand racked 1 rack which spread well but trapped the cueball. I used the big Diamond rack on 3 and a template on a couple.

Table with worn cloth and 4 1/8" pockets plays too tight for me so I am guilty of playing the break shots a little gingerly. The break to the side i really hammered and got a good spread but like I said I dogged the next shot.

Hitting the pack high & hard with a steep angle works better for me with worn cloth/triangle-racked sticky balls (rather than barreling thru), since you typically end up away from the crowd at table center, but the break ball is thus farther from a tight pocket, and a cross table scratch is also common.

Practiced a little the other day then played a few racks of 14.1. I made a conscientious effort to stroke the break balls a little firmer and with the proper English had much better results.
