In the old days it was a full round robin of about 12 players in matches to 60 points.
Then for a while it was changed to sets to best of 5 sets to 15 point. This was arguably a more exciting format, but the potential total scores ranged from 45-0 to 74-72, so there was a large variation in time required. I think the set format worked out to be something like a single game to 52 points (based on its ability to sort wheat from chaff).
Now both World Cups and World Championships are matches to 40.

Kozoom now has a very nice feature in the replays where they show the path of the cue ball as it travels in the overhead shot.
