Love this tournament, too bad Steinway has ( so it is written anyway) such limited parking. New England is nice too ya know and we have parking lots. :)

Steinway is nice. Bill and I walked there every day from our hotel. I know Charlie was always able to get parking in a lot pretty close. Not sure if or what it cost.

Qualifiers

What is required for a room to have a qualifier? There are so few places. Is that because Dragon Promotions prefers very few qualifiers, or is that because no one wants to do it?

Has there been any discussion of increasing the number of qualifiers?

There obviously has to be a limit. Otherwise, there would be no room for players like Oliver Ortmann, John Schmidt, Thorsten Hohmann, Darren Appleton.

However, I think we have not reached that limit. They just added Berlin. I know Charlie was talking with someone out west about having one on the west coast.

I had to lobby Charlie to get one in Chicago. He said there was no interest and I said I was sure we could get enough players.

If your local pool hall is interested, I am sure it is not too late to jump in.

I'm sure its nice Dennis, I've got a bad ticker though. You'd probably find me slumped against a building along the way and people would be dropping change on me.

In response to At Large’s question about the results of the Boynton Beach qualifier:

It was won by Slate Billiards room owner Mike Bradford, a strong player and stand-up guy who actually grew up playing with Mike Dechaine in the same town in Maine. It was a very tough slog pulling off a 14.1 tournament in that area (and Mike deserves great credit for his stubbornness in hosting it) where the focus is entirely on 9-ball, one pocket money games and 8-ball leagues. Last year the qualifier spots were won by Jeff Mohl, formerly of Chicago, and ....... LOL, a local hot shot 9-ball gambler who never bothered to go up to NYC for the tournament.

The other spot, gratifyingly, was won by veteran player Danny "The Golden Touch" Christian who has played 14.1 for 40 years and loves the game. He gave lessons for a while at Steve Mizerak’s old pool room that he had in Palm Beach county, and also often went up to play 14.1 in Grady Matthew’s old room. Danny beat Jeff Mohl for that spot, so you know that he hits them pretty well.

Yours truly was happy to serve as expendable canon fodder, and spectator, for these deserving players. (Hey, I paid my entry fee like everyone else!)

Agreed. We need to make sure that the real stars of 14.1 are not excluded --- perhaps anyone that has ever had a top 10 finish in the event shouldn't have to qualify.

.... but, as you say, there is still room for growth in the qualifier system, and it would improve the quality of the fields by making the event more accessible to top players.

The top 14.1 events of thirty five years ago included Mike Sigel, Ray Martin, Allen Hopkins, Steve Mizerak, Dan DiLiberto, Irving Crane, Joe Balsis, Jim Rempe, Nick Varner, Lou Butera, Dallas West and Luther Lassiter, Frank McGown, Pete Margo, Dick Lane, Pat Fleming, Jack Colavita, Larry Lisciotti and John Ervolino. Perhaps one day the Dragon World 14.1 can have a field of such talent and depth, but for it to happen, 14.1 must have a wider reach. Growing ht e qualifier system would be a good start.
