Struck up conversation with a guy last night while I was racking a 9ball game and said "8ball is real pool. Everything else like 9 ball is a kids game."
I asked "Even one pocket and straight pool?" thats all I could say without laughing at him.

Do you ever run into people like this that only want to play one game?

That was me back when i'd only been playing about 8 months. i'll play just about anything these days.

I run into them all the time, & they're all bar table bangers.

I'm more of an ANYTHING but 9ball kinda guy, so I empathize with the fella you're laughing at. 8ball wouldn't have been my first choice, but I woulda taken it if it meant I didn't have to play 9ball. :o

now, to answer your question, YES, I run into guys that only will play 9ball, so I sometimes have no choice....but my favorite "guy" to run into is the one that thinks 1P is like watching paint dry

He was a nice guy aside from this. Plays for a local 8ball bar box league and I said I would sub if he ever needed a guy.

The best is when a guy is whining about "all the luck" in 9-ball as he runs an 8-ball rack WITHOUT EVER ONCE falling on the ball and pocket he intended to shoot next.

I like both games ok, but the arguments that one has a ton more luck than the other, or one is a far better game than the other just don't get anywhere with me. Neither of them is fit to be a championship game, IMHO.

Well the "...is for kids" comment annoyed me. Really? Tell that to the U.S. Open nine ball championship players right now. He didnt know what one pocket even was. I beat him at two nine ball games and then he looked like a completely different player once we got an 8 ball rack going.

My wife calls 8-ball "Regular" pool. Me & my buddies always play 9-ball at the house because we gamble, and we like 9-ball. The other day she wanted to play pool. She says lets play Regular pool because she knows the rules better, and I always beat her at 9-ball. I say fine because it's good to play something different, and I enjoy all the games. After the first game she says. Wow, I think you play 8-ball better than you play 9-ball. After 5 games where she averaged 1.5 shots per game she says: "Let's play 9-ball, I never get to shoot in 8-ball when I play you!"

if it was on a barbox - they REALLY are very different games....but I believe 8ball is easier on a 9 footer than 9ball is, so it depends on the track. It's hard to play ALL games really well (you usually play one better than all others). As an example, I know plenty of folks that would have to spot me in 9ball that need a spot from me in 1P. The guy you ran into probably doesn't play 9ball, so he doesn't feel as comfortable playing it.....but the "kids game" comment was definitely unnecessary. He should've just said, "I play 8ball much better than I do 9".

I certainly would feel more comfortable playing barbox 8ball against a GREAT player than I would playing them 9ball. (I hardly play either, but I do play in a Thurs. nite league in 8ball).

Yes it was on a bar box. I really am a beginner (dont even have my own cue yet) So eight ball was tough for me because most of my balls were clustered together and we had to call all shots.

I run into very few people who say that about 8-ball, most people who say that are saying 9-ball or 1p or 14-1 are the only "real" games. Personally I don't enjoy 9-ball either, but that doesn't reduce the validity of it as a game. All games are valid with the possible exception of games of 7 balls or less.

8ball, thinking game for people with no stroke.

9ball, stroke game for people with no think.

Got a good brain but very little stroke, you could still be solid at 8 ball. Got a good stroke but very little brain, you could still be solid at 9 ball. Never the other way around.

I understand the "8 ball is real pool". Not the 9-ball is for kids though.

The game of billiards was designed to use all 15 balls and all 6 pockets.

I hate playing 9-ball and will never have enough time for 1 pocket.

I changed my motto earlier this year, you know the "2010-ball". My motto is that I only play games that start with Even Numbers. (8-ball, 10-ball, 14.1).

9-ball is a joke IMO. The pattern racking, the wing balls, the slop effect, the 9-ball break, etc.

8-ball on the barbox is my favorite. Small space, more balls, clusters, precision shape, etc.

Hey I even offered to play 10 ball but that was shot down. I like to play nine ball on a bar table because then I will play a game of six ball with the balls that I havent used. Two games for the price of one.

You guys are all idiots.....Cut Throat is the only real pool game

LOL, the 8-ball comment is the all-loving bar/bangers anthem.....I like 8-ball, but it's the least favorite of all games....

1 pocket rocks
14.1, super cool
Rotation, awesome
9-ball, greatness
10-ball, equally great
banks, fun
8-ball - only for league

Actually, it works out kind of nice that there are two games that are played by large numbers of amateur players, and that each game has it's own special requirements with regard to skill and knowledge. Many players will assume that another player (even a real good player) is much worse at one game than the other. I think this is true for many players, but a well rounded player is going to play both games similarly well in my experience, especially if they have a fairly big break.

Many times I have thought a gambling session was over, only to have my opponent ask to switch from one game to the other. One guy I will never forget was stuck pretty bad after playing some $100/game 9-ball. As he was unscrewing he said he'd double the bet if we switched to 8-ball. My hand shot into my pocket for a coin so fast I nearly broke my wrist. He made an incorrect assumption, which I think is something that happens to a lot of players.

Twice a year, the western BCA gets together in Lincoln City, Oregon for regional championships. One of these is 8 ball, the other 9 ball. These are played on Diamond bar boxes. Kind of funny how the "usual suspects" end up in the top tier of the Men's master singles division, in both games.

Both games are real pool...and good players can play either very well.

oh, I getcha. I've witnessed Jesse Bowman completely dismantle VERY VERY good players playing both on a barbox. But more times than not, a player is better at one than the other.

I played a guy some 14.1 races to 100, and won 3 in a row, when he said he really liked playing 1P better.....HEADS! lol. Let's just say we ended up playing 9ball after just a couple of 1P games.

agreed, top tier players are really good at most games...but, you move down to c players, and in MOST cases, their "favorite" will show.
