There may not be an "official" answer to this question as I know there are different rules for different players. Shooting 8 ball with usual ball-n-hand on all cue ball fouls and spot any balls not called. Anyway; I was shooting my last stripe which was sitting in the jaws of the corner pocket. Preventing a direct hit was the 8 ball sitting a few inches in front of the stripe. I banked the cue ball 2 rails hoping to kick in the stripe behind the 8. I instead I hit the 8 which hit the stripe into the pocket. So there was some "discussion" about how to proceed -- spot the stripe and give my opponent ball-n-hand or just spot the stripe or leave the stripe in and just give ball-n-hand. We decided to give my opponent one or the other penalty but not both. He wanted both. Which seems fair considering we didn't have a rule in the first place?
