8-Ball Rules

The player that knows, understands and can execute the strategy of eight ball will win more games when playing "you got what you make on the break". That would be my choice.

For me the eight on the break is a toss up. Doesn't happen much. Call pocket is a good rule.

What is clean this is the kind of rule I do not like. I have seen arguments out of banger who cant run 2 balls when you cut in a ball and it scrubs the rail enroute to the pocket or goes off 2 tits and then falls, call a pocket and if it goes it is good.

The meaning of the "clean" rule in our room is the 8 can't hit another ball. Or double kiss. Rails are fine, as long as it goes in the pocket you called without hitting another ball.

Wouldn't bother me if they did away with that rule. I can live with it, too.

i think perhaps the biggest and most improtant rule in 8 ball is whether or not you can use a solid to pocket a stripe (or vice versa) after an open table break. this comes up SO much and many times is the best way to pick apart your only problem area. its a huge game changer, but mant people dont like one to be able to do this.

i am glad you mentioned that. i am going to look this up in my apa rulebook. im not sure what it says about this. in my money league it is legal.

On an open table in the APA, if you pocket stripe with solid or vice versa, it's a legal shot and you are whatever you made. If you pocket one of each, it's still open.

I've got a question for the guys who don't think you should be able to win the game on a "fluke" making the 8 on the break. Should you lose the game if you "fluke" and make the 8 early? Or do you spot the 8 in that case, too? What if you "fluke" and scratch on the 8? How many different ways can you get away with screwing up the 8 ball? ;)

That and I've never played at a bar where they wouldn't open the table to get the 8 back out if you wanted it, especially after an 8 break. It depends on how well you know your bartenders, and how much of a jackass you aren't. :D

The World Standardized Rules are the way to go. They minimize the amount of luck in the game. It's pretty much the way they played 8-ball when I first played the game in 1955, with the exception that if you didn't make a legal hit, your opponent had the option of accepting the shot or making you shoot again. The ball-in-hand was a good move as it sped up the game.

I don't think the rule of fluking in an early eight without losing will fly. There could be a fine line of fluke or intentional. Sometimes it would be an advantage to pocket the eight if there is no loss of game.
