8 Ball safe question

I was playing 8 ball,1&15, I was shooting the 8, called safe , but the 8 ball rolled down the rail and into a pocket. What is the rule?

Which rule book are you using? In my APA league that's loss of game. In my BCA league using World Standardized Ruled it's a scratch. My opponent gets Ball in hand and game continues.

My mistake,I misread that the 8-ball not cueball scratched in the wrong pocket. AFAIK, all 8-ball rules treat it as lose of game.

You lose in any league format you play in, amateur, pro, Europoean, American, Phillipino, and possibly even on Mars... you done lost Sir :)

Just think of it this way, 8 ball is and was primarily a bar box game. Once you pay your money into the pool table, you can't get any object balls back, so you have to loose.

I hardly ever play that game, but that's how I remember. :)

What's the point of calling safe? you only call safe when you want to sink one of
your balls and not shoot again, right?

I think you are basically right. In my opinion you should call safe as a courtesy to your opponent in every case when you are playing safe. Also if you accidentally pocket a ball playing safe having not announced a safety it could lead to an argument.

I don't know why you would even think this. Consider the OP is playing 1 & 15, a game that has roots that predates bar boxes by 30 years or so.

Let me rephrase... it is the game primarily played on a bar box. The rules have evolved based on that fact.

There... now, when you put your money in, you can't get object balls back, so.... you can't spot up the 8. So, your game is over. You have either won or lost. Since you have to call the 8 to win, that narrows down the options.

I read what you're saying, but the rules did not evolve based on bar box play. "The 8-ball in the wrong hole" rule also predates bar boxes.

Now if we were talking about "all balls stay down" being related to bar box, you'd have a pretty good argument although the Texas Express guys might beg to differ.

But specifically to "loss on the 8-ball if it goes into the wrong pocket" has been a written rule in 8-ball since at least 1948. That had nothing to do with future bar room play.

Excerpt from the 1948 8-ball Rules (which included the 1 & 15 requirements)

"Since a player is required to call his shot when playing for the 8-ball, he loses
the game if the 8-ball drops into a pocket not designated on the call. "

Yes, I have no problem with calling safe as a courtesy however in this case since he was shooting the 8 it would serve no purpose. You either going to make it (call a shot]or miss no call

NOT on the 8ball, you call a pocket, just in case, and when you safe works, you lose your turn anyways..... I rarely ever shoot at the 8b without calling something... even if it is an obvious safety, I will call the pocket the furthest away so my opponent starts grinning... and then play the safe :)

never, never, never, and I say never call safety shooting to the 8... think about it, it makes no sense. You always have to call the pocket with most posibilities, even if you are not trying to pocket it.

All of the above kind of went through my mind before the shot. I have only been playing for a few years and just started playing a lot of 8 ball about 6 months ago.

I was near the corner pocket on the long rail with the 8 ball on the rail and cue ball almost touching the 8 at an angle. My opponent's balls were all at the other end of the table

My idea was to call a safe and leave the cue on the short rail on my end since I thought there was no way of making the 8. When I tried to slice the 8 with the cue the eight just slowly rolled down the rail, into the corner, like the trick shot in the movie Pool Hall Junkies.

So I now understand the idea of calling something just in case. Maybe I'm wrong but I often play safe on the 8 if I have no shot and try to make it a hard shot for the other guy. I know it would be better to learn how to play better position, but until I learn I use what I have.
