8-ball Situation

A few weeks back I was playing this guy which is a good player, I broke and made nothing. He then proceeded to shoot an obvious 2-5 combo, but mistakenly called the wrong ball (called 2 and made 5). When he called the 2 I stood up and grabbed my cue since I was sure he wouldn't make it & we were sitting 20+ ft away in our 2-table league. When I got to the table he said that "I knew what he meant".....would you take the table from him due to this mistake?

Reasons I walked to the table....

#1 This player is a cocky jerk and would have definitely called it on
me and took the table.
#2 It is league night & I didn't want to let my team down.

Instead of admitting the mistake, he basically degraded me asking "am I really gonna pull that". Putting the blame on me as if I'm cheating....even though he made the mistake.

This isn't any dirtier than the players that foul and leave the cueball in hopes the player doesn't notice or know the rules. People even go as far as to wait for the cueball to return in the table and replace it to possibly confuse their opponent. Most any other players I woulda just let shoot...

Since it was in a league, I would have let the team captains work it out...thats part of their jobs. If it were gambling and I knew I had the nuts playing the guy, personally I would have let it slide....looking at the big picture that I was gonna win and didnt want to upset him and make him quit. JMO.

I figure if you knew what he meant you should have let it slide. There's enough nits and rivit counters in the world why be one yourself.
 
Ehh I always take those guys with a grain of salt. If he missed that badly chances are he is not going to run the table ( or did he? ). I think it also depends on how serious your league is. If you are confident enough and KNOW he is lieing call him out. I believe in VNEA it is still the players call unless you have someone watching the shot. Correct me if Im wrong.

I would have let it go.

I can't argue with you calling him on it though. That's the rules, and you're entitled to be a nit about them.

But there are two things you said that I find objectionable:

(1) You wouldn't call it on other people, only on this guy.

(2) You grabbed your cue and got up before he shot.

Not sure your description makes complete sense.....presumably you mean "when he called the 2" you knew he wouldn't make it i.e not "when he called the 5":confused:

My contribution to nitpicking being made:) I agree with others that perhaps you should have let it go and taken the moral high ground.

Well, did you know what he meant? If it were me, that would be the relevant question. If I was sure he just mis-spoke, I wouldn't call a foul. If I wasn't sure, and thought he might really be going for the other ball, then that's why the call-shot rule exists. If there are two shots a player might be going for and he calls one and makes the other, there's no dilemma.

It's one thing to let it go if you are playing singles.....but one has to consider their team when making that decision ......also if it is in a tournament situation it might be different.....

A moment of lucidity and pool-relatedness from hippie. It's a good point that in a team event, your team should have a say in how strictly you're going to interpret the rules.

Calling your shot

One of the leagues I play in is a call-your-shot league. But, this is only warranted if a shot is NOT totally obvious. Shots that would fall into this category would be banks, combos, or a carom; shots of this sort. This includes the 8 ball. But, I would not call a foul if a person banked the 8 ball or any ball one rail and didn't call it. Only if it went 2 rails, then I would question the opponent. I look it as where I would play it if I were shooting the shot.

In this type of situation, knowing that the 2 was the shot he was intending to make, I would not call a foul.

Getting up was not a shark move as he was facing the other direction... if I didn't make my way to the table this guy would shot the hanger within seconds as he shoots VERY fast & the place was loud.
