My roomate and his friend were playing earlier and they told me about this 9 ball break.

I think the cue ball missed the one ball, but you tell me.

Also I would like opinions on the quality of video. I am using this 1.3Mp surveillance camera at MPEG4 640x480. It can record audio as well, but that it is illegal in WA state unless I post signs around my house that audio monitoring is being used.

Based on the reaction and finish of one ball I would say no. He did not hit one ball first.

It hits the 1. grazes it then grazes the 8. you can see it pretty well plus if you hit the eight and not the one, the one would float up table instead of heading to the side pocket area. you have to post that you are videoing your own home inside?!?! What kind of nazis run your state!:groucho: no foul on the break...yes foul on your state's laws :p

It's not a full ball hit, but it did hit the one ball first.

I would say no foul

In WA state it is illegal to record audio unless all parties are aware that audio is being recorded. I can record video all I want with no legal worries, but I tell people that come play at my house that I am recording it. Makes for a good Instant Replay.

If you'll freeze frame at 12 seconds, you can see that the 1 ball has started moving and the 8 ball has not. He did hit the head ball first.

If you look at it frame by frame it looks like it misses the one. Anyone else concur?

Video looks good, lighting is a bit washed out, but very usable.

Hard to tell on the hit, but with the way the one leaves the rack, I have to go with legal.

We'll have to get together and play soon--before I leave for merry ol' england, at least.

Dld,

Yes we need to play some. I am available any week night after 7 or so. Give me a call.

I played it in slow motion with Windows Media Player. It's very hard to call but I think the cue ball hits the 8 ball first, and does not thin the 1 ball before hitting the 8 ball. I say it's a foul.

If we're having this much discussion and differing assessments, then it's too close to call. Not a foul IMO. The shooter gets the benefit of the doubt (unless the opponent is bigger and meaner, in which case his position carries more weight).

It looks like he thinned the 1ball. Either way you can't really call it without some sort of high frames video camera. No foul IMO
