9-ball ghost rules

I haven't played it much, but I'm trying 9-ball ghost as a way to practice- I'm sure the rules can vary, how do y'all play tho?

some questions I thought of on the table tonight-

is pattern-racking kosher?

does slop count?

how do scratches count? and off the break?

how to count 9-ball combos? golden breaks?

cheers-

Rack like you would in a match.
After the break, take ball in hand even if you scratch (but try to work on not scratching)
Once you start, any miss or scratch is loss of game.
Slip, combos and riding the 9 counts

Check out the sticky we have at the top of the main forum called ghost challenge. We have a yearly competition in there with scores and videos. The second post has suggested rules.

Feel free to add your scores to the thread (even if there is no video).

This is correct. If I'm playing rack your own in a real match with someone, I generally put the 2 ball in a friendly spot if there is no requirement for it. When I practice by playing with the ghost I just put it in the back of the rack.

You can set/stipulate whatever rules you want for playing the ghost - to make it as easy or as tough as you'd like, which would likely be determined by your skill level. The ultimate ghost challenge would entail random racking, you must make a ball on the break, scratch on the break you lose, slop is allowed but if you make the 9-ball early it stays down but you still then have to run out the table to beat the ghost. An additional twist I like to add after a successful break in which at least one ball is pocketed, is having the option to play the cue ball where it lies as opposed to getting ball-in-hand, and if I'm able to run out, I get double value for that game - I can mark up 2 games for myself instead of the normal 1 game for the ball-in-hand runout.

One thing i/we do is on the break if you make a ball(s) and scratch, they spot. Other than that its just basic 9ball, slop and all. 9 0n the snap is a win as long as you don't scratch. Scratch anytime after the break and you lose. Have to run out or combo to win.

See I don't count snaps. I spot the 9. Technically you are playing Rack your own and 9balls shouldnt count in rack your own, in at least the back two pockets. Personally I dont like 9balls counting anywhere on the break in Rack your own.

They do in a tournament or gambling so why not here? Why should you be punished for a good break?

I use the magic rack or turtle rack, the 9 barely moves. It's been years since I've played anywhere that counted the 9 on the snap anyways. It usually spots, especially when it's rack your own.

Doesn't count ANYWHERE? I can see not counting the bottom two pockets but not the rest. Never seen 9b played that way. Ever.

I’ve had some good breaks at 9-ball.....made seven once...made five and rattled three....
....I dream sometimes of how to make all nine...I think whitey has to go airborne...
...when it lands, it moves three balls into pockets....

Soooo...if I ever make all nine balls on the break....without scratching....
....and the cue ball ends up on the spot....
...and a guy walks up and says the 9-ball doesn’t count...
...and spots it froze to whitey in a straight line...
....I’M GONNA FREAK...
AND TURN THAT POOLHALL INTO A PARKING LOT

:angry::angry:

I don’t like these rules that try to take luck out of 9-ball, in tournaments or ghost. Just play 10-ball.

Roger that. That's funny as hell.

You'd still have some sort of a bank throw shot. But what if you were cushion hooked? Then you know it's not your day.
