9 Ball Practice Routine

Hey all,

Just thought I'd post a new practice routine that I started today at my local pool hall, my mate Dougie showed me this one so the credit goes to him:

Use the 9 balls

Place the 2 & 6 ball a little bit out from top left corner pocket @ the baulk line end of the table.

Place the 4 ball in the corner pocket across from the 2 & 6

Place the 1 ball a little bit out from the left centre pocket

Place the 8 ball a little bit out from the right centre pocket

Place the 3 & 7 a little bit out from the bottom left corner pocket

Place the 5 ball a little bit out from the bottom right corner pocket

Finally place the 9 on the spot, but watch out this makes the run out a bit of a nightmare if position is even just a little bit off you got problems.

I tried this for 3 hours today & only ran out once because I got sloppy & got hooked when I thought the runout's were in the bag so don't take this routine for granted it is TOUGH!.

Sounds good, but I could picture it better with, well, a picture

You got that right! A picture is worth a thousand words and he used only about a hundred. If I recall Bert Kinister has some good videos for 9-ball drills.

I usually practice my break..cutting the one to the side pocket,or trying to make the wing ball while bring the one cross table to the corner while
leaveing the cue close to center table..usually I'm off on that, an down table
just past the side with a shot on the one..or two if I drop the one.
I play the ghost with no ball in hand, because in a real game I have
to work with what I have after the break..
I also throw the ball out at different ends of the table to work
on going around the table using follow or draw using the rails..
work on force follow,as well as force draw..then on to banks an kicks.
over all I suck..but what the heck its fun,an cost me nothing..
well..almost nothing..cover my table once a year..except for this
year..maybe next year..
play well.

I'm not at a pc at the minute but as soon as I am I will post a diagram which will sufficiently help matters.

You have to be a signed-in member of pool.bz to see their layouts these days. This is also a 3D rendering of the table; which is nice because you can move the "view" around to see what's what. a top-down 2D image is attached. I threw this together based on the 3D diagram, hope it's accurate enough.

Thanks stljohnny I have been having trouble all day trying to post that, thanks a lot.

This is more of a beginner drill. Most could beat the ghost opposite handed on this drill. Not saying that it's not a good drill if it challenges you. Anytime you work through a drill and get more consistent at executing it, your making headways IMO. I can see where this could be helpful for some by being able to accomplish it without fail.
Good Luck to you and keep putting in the work
I should not have used the word "most" because honestly I don't know how accurate the word "most" would be when describing players as a mass

I just thought it was an interesting drill as I struggle with using the rails/spin to get position on balls & I thought I would post it was something I had never seen before but is already paying dividends for me.

Its a nice little drill to practice getting the CB back to centre table. You don't really need to put any english on the CB. Draw and topspin will do the trick.

Once you can do this consistentlyjust move the balls over the corners out a diamond or 2 so the pots aren't all hangers.

Regards

Pidge that's exactly what I intend to do once I get more proficient with the drill, on a side note since doing this drill I now find it easier to draw the ball so something must be working.

Actually you could do this drill with center ball just cutting the balls thick or thin

Because all the balls are hangers you don't need to think about potting the ball, instead you can just concentrate on your stroke and where you are hitting the CB.

I went through a spell back in the day where if I had a difficult pot, all I'd think about is making the ball and ended up not contacting the CB where I wanted.

But good post, drills like that are great for improving if you find them challenging.

Nice post!

Practice, practice,practice.

I'll assume you know your cue and tip. Now you need to get the right english and ball speed down. Once you get the feel,... you need to get the felt down. That only comes with practice,.. and a lot of it. I'm glad you found a drill you like, keep on keepin' on !

I practice the ghost, but I put 1-5 shoes on the table as obstacles depending on how well im playn. usually one shoe on each long rail pointing to center and one in the center pointing to the sides.. if this is to hard throw out all soilds and play it like 8-ball or remove shoes.

Drill

If u had every ball thats a hanger about 1.5 foot from the pocket it would make this a bit more challenging
