9 vs 10-ball

So what makes 10 ball harder than 9 ball? Aside from the obvious differences, is it in fact a more challenging game?

Chris

The most obvious challenge is the real challenge. Having that extra ball makes the break more important. You usually can't baby the break and dry breaks mean more clusters than you'll find in 9 ball. In 9 ball, a ball or two in the break is common. Unless you're Shane Van Boenig, your 10 ball break may not be as successful. Aside from that, the 10 ball usually is not counted in the bottom corner pockets. They say it's actually easier to break in the 10 ball to those corners than it is for 9, thus, in tournaments I've played in, it usually doesn't count down there and gets spotted. Since I started playing it, I enjoy the added challenge and it's been my favorite game since.

Im not convinced that the one extra ball makes the clusters occour more often. I seem to average a couple of balls on the break so then it comes down to running out just like in 9-ball. Any other opinions?

The extra ball does indeed create more traffic than you'd believe until you experience it. The way we play is call ball and pocket, only one ball called per shot, no 10 on the break wins, and if any ball is illegally pocketed the incoming player has the option to make you shoot again. Basically it's a no slop rotation game. The rules are completely different than 9-ball. The break is also much different because of the rack shape, so until it is figured out it'll be tougher than 9-ball.

I love the game. There's no slop & no snapping wins on the break. And if you slop something in and get a lucky safe, your opponent can make you shoot again. It favors skill more than 9-ball, IMO. Don't get me wrong, every game requires skill to play well. But nine ball allows for some sloppy, lucky stuff that ten ball absolutely prohibits. It's a good game. Still rotation but completely different than nine ball.

The break and the rules for 10 Ball give it the nod over 9 Ball, by far. Just my opinion, but I think something like this has been needed for a long, long time.

Go on youtube or whatever to watch some professional 10 balls matches and you will see. Compare that to some of the best soft breakers racks (alcano, corey deuel, pagulayan, etc), you will notice the difficulty of the run outs.
