Received this cue yesterday. I was very pleased with work Dmitry did and how cue came out. Great workmanship, finish is really nice, looks like glass. Hornbeam shaft looks different from maple shafts I am used to but, feels good. Great balance, no weight bolt. Cue feels really good in hand.
Did not have a chance to try it due to my crazy schedule. Hoping to take out for a spin this Sat or Sun.
But I can say this - Dmitry's work is as good as most well known cue makers out here in the States. After inspecting this cue I can proudly say that Dmitry can compete on US market and be successful.
I have always wanted to get a cue made by my fellow countryman. And now I can proudly say that I own a cue by a great Russian cue maker Dmitry Komarov.
Dmitry is a very modest man but, let me say this - just recently a person won EU championship using his cue, many other people use cues by Dmitry and winning tournaments in EU and Russia.
I will post a detailed review after i spend an hour or two on a pool table with my new Siberian weapon :D
For now here are some pictures. Cue is somewhat simple but, just as I wanted it to be.

That is some crazy grain in this cue. Very nice, thanks for showing.
 
The cue is Beautiful . Love the Black Palm , the emrold tip on the hornbeam shaft should work very Nicely . I agree Dmitrys work is as good as anyones . I have had several , to sell for him . Thanks for showing . Jim:thumbup:
 
Please PLEASE write a review on the Hornbeam shaft and how the cue plays!

I've had my eye on a cue from him for a good while now but am unsure about the hornbeam.

If it's stiffer than maple, would it equate to more deflection?

Believe me, I can not wait to try it myself. But my work schedule been really unpredicted lately. Very busy.
I will post full review once i try it long enough to understand if I like it or not.

It's nice to see Dmitry's cues here in the US market and people recognizing his great talent and craftsmanship.

Like Jim, I am a big fan of his style of cue making. Love his FS stuff a lot with the butterfly geometry.

I wrote several times about how hornbeam shafts play.
It's stiff, really stiff. Some people here in Germany think, DBK cues are the stiffest they have played before.
Personally I think it depends on taper. Hornbeam as wood is harder as maple. It allows the cuemaker to make thinner shafts. Dmitry's new taper is kinda LD, plays really great imo.

Hornbeam shaft review

Sorry it took so long. Just wanted to make sure how I feel about it.
Well, to make it short, I think it is a great shaft.
Hit is really stiff, forget everything you tried - BlueGrass, Hunter etc. This hornbeam shaft is stiffer than any maple shaft I tried. But at the same time it has lots of feel and provides a lot of action. Too much action sometimes if you do not know how to control it. At first i was trying to understand how it plays and it was really fun to learn what the shaft is capable of.
Now I can say - hornbeam shafts have to be brought to US market. For people that prefer a stiff hit, THIS IS IT. But, again, with all that stiffness, you get tons of feel and action. Hard to describe. Hope my explanation makes sense.
Now, a touchy subject. Deflection, a.k.a. squirt. Yes, it does have deflection but, compared to regular maple shaft it is very little. I would categorize this shaft as something in between LD shafts and regular maple shafts. With extremely stiff hit.
Deflection is minimal, about 50% less than regular maple will produce. But it is not quite in LD range. Therefore, I put it in between maple and LD shafts.
If you ask me, I would strongly suggest trying one for yourself. They are fairly inexpensive and Dmitry does put his unique taper which I think makes a difference as well.
Also, just FYI. Longoni is using hornbeam in combination with maple for their LD version of shafts for pool and 3c cues. Here:

I have had similar experience, especially on thinner shaft diameters. Almost all LD shafts I tried are... vague ;) But not with a hornbeam shaft.

I am currently experimenting with LD and one thing I can tell for sure - predator will NEVER be in my case. Such a low quality production, it is unbelievable. They went from a good production cues/shafts to really low quality in a matter of 1-2 years. I guess they call it "cost effective'. I call it cheap.
A good friend, few days ago tried to remove a sticker from brand new Z2 shaft and tried to lift end of the sticker with his nail...guess what? Put a ding into brand new shaft. What kind of quality is that?
Did not try thinner hornbeam shafts yet, just do not like thin shafts.
