A beautiful Bender I cannot have

Did you ever see a cue which is very beautiful, and the price is affordable, you like its design and the cue is built by the reputable cuemaker, but for some reason you just cannot take it home...

I have a chance today to own this fancy bender. It's a 15 pointer since the short points are recut. It has fancy ivory rings which has 15 inlays per ring. The shafts are like new and dead straight. The design is very balanced, elegant, and unique. All the inlays are very well done without seeing the glueline. and the price is quite low.

BUT THE BUTT ROLLS!!!

I really like this bender, but it's such a pity that I cannot have it due to the wobble butt... At least I can post its pictures to share with you AZers coz it's really beautiful!

Sorry about the bad quality of the pictures coz I took them in a pool room without adequate lighting. But you can still tell its beauty from the design.

The issue might be the handle. If that's the case you might have it sent NORTH for correction.

Very nice cue! is the owner willing to adjust price to reflect wobble? If so, take it way!!!! beautiful cue!

I have seen many Benders with this problem. Bender uses a Parabolic taper for his cues. For those who may read this, who may not know what a Parabolic taper is, it is a taper where the cues joint when rolled on a table will not touch the cloth. When using this taper technique, any defect throughout the entire length of the cue butt will accentuated at the cues joint. Cues that use a normal straight taper where the joint touches the cloth when rolled hide the same minor defects that appear terrible with the Parabolic taper.

In many cases the issues with these problems in my mind out weigh the benefits of using of this type of taper.

I don't know how did I do it but for some reason I've read about numerous Benders with the same problem in the last few days... It's just strange because - as I could see everywhere - these cues are pretty expensive and they have a lot of work going into them... I truly find it a pity that a many thousand dollar cue has its butt warped... Even a wobbling shaft would be a bit odd to me - I know it's not that strange and unusual though as we are talking about wood...

Manwon, is there any way to fix this problem - I suppose (from what ribdoner said) that sometimes it might be fixed... or am I wrong?

You Can't Roll A Cue, With A Parabolic Taper, Flat On A Pool Table To Tell If It's Straight, At Least Not With Any Accuracy. Roll The Cue With The Nose Elevated On The End Rail. If The Pin Doesn't Move Up And Down It's Straight. That's Still Not Truely Accurate, The Only Way To Do It Right, Is To Spin The Cue In A Lathe.

Rolling A Cue Flat On A Table Is Tough, Even On A Cue With A Straight Taper. A Small Pull In The Wrap, Or An Uneven Leather/lizard Wrap, Can Make A Cue Look Warped On A Table. Elevating The Nose Helps Eliminate Thos Factors, But It's Still Not 100%

Is your avatar one of Paul's cues (Dayton)?

Hello John,

How do you know that? :p I thought it's a 1/1 coz I designed the pattern of this cue.

Have a nice day~

Terence.

Dears,

Thanks for your opinions, I will try to find a lathe to give it a try again. Will keep you guys updated if it works.

Regards,
Terence.

Its a very nice design and a 1/1, I like it - its a beautiful forearm. Paul and I talk about cues (always have fun with him:) ) --- he said he was doing some very small diamond inlays so I wondered since its clean lines like he builds.

Putting the cue in a lathe and spinning it also will not show if the cue straight all the time. Many cue makers today are not using the pin as a center for the butt, or the rear center when the butt was originally turned may also not be dead center of the butt cap.

I use the pin as my turning center for the front, and I insure the butt cap opening is large enough for a live center to pass through to reach my rear center.

Getting back to what I have said above, many Bender Cues have this wobble due to the Parabolic taper. While many players love this taper, including myself due to the hit of cues with it, it is very easy to have these problems, and the smallest roll will be amplified when using it.

Hello John,

You're right. It took Paul a lot of time to do the tiny diamonds, and the results is very very good. Like the following picture:

I also enjoy the talk with Paul every time I have some questions regarding cues. He is a really well-knowledged cuemaker.

Ciao,
Terence.

i agree 100%. looks bad on the cuemaker if the cue rolls out. 99% of ppl think the cue is not straight even when it is
