RKC, I think like every human you are right sometimes - in other cases you may well be wrong.
My main concern is to look at people totally unrelated to the deeper secrets of pool - the derogatory term here for them is "bangers". If you want a broad base of people interested in pool you have to realize that not everybody is reading AZB and the like. But there are millions of people who might find pool interesting enough if it were provided to them for free on cable tv or the like. A small percentage of those again would join our ranks of players with a deeper interest. And even those who would not would add to the viewer statistics on tv thus getting advertisers and sponsors a lot more interested than they are currently.
This is just my 2 Cents.
It is obvious that in order to promote pool we need it in all kinds of mass-media are possible. And I agree that at least in the start in order to gain as much audience as possible it better the possibility to watch the show be free. I am not a PPV fan at all and hardly believe many non-pool related people will spend their money to watch it.
Very simple example on the basis of my country and possibility to watch pro-pool tournaments which are held in Europe. There is KOZOOM streaming the events so you are able to watch it but of course you have to pay for it. And the payments for the premium pass are 10eu for a day, 25 for 10 days, 50 for 3 months and 100 for a year. Now let's have a look at the average ukranian earning may be 250-300 euros if he lucky to live in the capital or other major city. I better won't tell you what is a teacher's salary in my country for example. You know what in 2015 during the EC for youth in Sankt-Johann only one player from Ukraine Vitaly Patsura represented the country. He has to go there alone without a coach or a team-leader who could support him. I quess it was the first time in the EPBF history but that was the sad situation in our country. He was 18 and it was his last chance to win the gold finally after bronzes he had before last two years and there was Filler-killer missing at that EC so he knew that is his chance and he grab such a desired gold in the last discipline 9-ball beating russian Sergiy Lutsker in the final. And quess how many people watched his success then... The ones who really cared about it - the coach and his friends out of our pool school buying the pass for the event and that's it. And nothing changes with this policy.
One more example it was WC 9-ball 2017 streamed free and at the same time US-Open bar tables tournament streamed PPV and I've seen very reasonable questions why to pay for this if the main tournament of the year you can watch free and that was one of the best thing about that WC. And when last US-Open 9-ball was held of course I was very interested how it is going on and watched it through the related group on FB and I've seen some comments of those who paid to Accu-Stats PPV and were very dissatisfied when see some parts of some matches it the group. Of course they didn't want others watch the show free when they paid for it and you expect the audience will grow? There are plenty of examples how sick is my favorite game. Sad but truth.
I could make more examples but all of them show there is no interest to watch it in such environment as here and pay for it. I'm very curious how is kozoom audience growing all these years and how many non-pool related people came in...
So I quess at least at the beginning until you have already big enough audience come in better have free streaming looking for the ads money and contracts instead of expecting viewers payments grow.
