A conversation with Anthony Meglino: The best player many people have never heard of...

Oh, so, you are equating "being a threat to a top pro", with "being a favorite over a top pro"? You're a real risk taker, aren't yah, mr. BigBawlz?

You are being so obnoxious about this... Isn't there an NPR political thread you can go argue in, or something?
You should order a hotdog, carve a head on it and enjoy your meal

Maybe look at his recent results at Derby, if you think he is not a threat to top pros. He's beaten quite a few top pros (at least in the One Pocket).

He beat both Tyler Styer and Fedor Gorst in this trip to DCC.

Yes, in the last few years he's beaten in rotation matches,
JL Chang,
Max Lechner,
Morra,
Morra again,
Mickey Krause,
Kiamco,
Styer,
Styer again,
Atencio,
Atencio again,
Diaz-Pizarro,
Matikainen,
Josh Roberts,
Chohan,
Thorpe,
Pinegar
and on and on.

For One Pocket matches, he's beaten in the last few years
Gorst
Pijus
Pijus again
Roland Garcia
Fortunski
Gerson Martinez
Gomez
Immonen
...

And still, not a threat - nobody is betting on him.

But I will say he is moving up and it's good to see him doing well. He's getting close

Of course he's a threat to beat pros in a single race and that's quite an accomplishment! I think that's the ultimate goal of any "amateur" player. Now maybe he's not a threat to win a big tournament, but neither are 90 percent of actual professionals.

True, and this is why amateur pool makes so much better sense for almost everyone. Being among the ranks of of resource deprived pros (trying to be polite) who are those 90% that are no real threat to win big tournaments is a rough life. Pro pool only makes sense if ones passion overwhelms one's desire for resources. Which is fine, if that's what you're after. No judgement here of course, to each their own. Pool is and will always be a game. It's a choose your own adventure for sure.

Not to poop on Anthony, he’s a very good player, but Derby 1P is a race to 3. A good 700 player can turnaround a break and gain the advantage and win in a short race

Dude is dissing Meglino, when the dude might get close to 800 Fargo after (if) Derby results are input into Fargorate, and is knocking on the door of a big win. I believe he basically dominates Florida pool, and that is with Corey Deuel still living there, I believe.

I love how everything gets turned into a big argument by some people. I submit that several comments in here are inaccurate. First and foremost, is the premise that anything about my post or this video suggested that he is a top echelon world pro, could be expected to regularly beat the top pros in the world mano a mano, or anything along those lines. The fact that he is number 7 in Fargorate and yet works a full time job is noteworthy and that is what is being noted. That's it and that's all. And he is a darned interesting guy to talk to and get some conception of how he goes about achieving great excellence for an amateur player.

Second, The title is not misleading at all. I personally knew who he was, and many of you on this site do, because3 many of us are more absorbed int he sport than most players are. But I can tell you that 9 out of 10 people I talked to around Derby City this year, did NOT know who he was or how he ranked in the US. So I consider the title to be right on the mark when it says he is the best American player you "might" not know. Assumed in that title is that you also "might" know who he is, which some of you proclaim loudly as if it somehow nullifies the fact that many don't know who he is. All of the other 7 players in the top 7 are household names among pool players, and he is not, which makes the title of the video entirely accurate.

Third, to suggest that he is not a threat to top pros on a given day is completely false. He outpaced and beat a number of pros to make his way to the top 4 in one pocket at Derby City this year. Most of you would be popping champagne corks tearing up social media if you got remotely close to that.

I think it is a remarkable thing that an amateur with a full time job in the medical industry is in the top 7 in the US, at least according to Fargorate. And the fact that he achieves that in his spare time is pretty remarkable. How it got turned into a discussion about whether he is equivalent with elite players like Shane and Jayson and Fedor is something for clinical psychologists to work out, because nothing in the original post or the video, or anything anyone else commented on suggested such things, so some of you will only be able to resolve this by getting some counseling. LOL.

Yeah, but he's not a 700 level player. He is knocking on the door of 800. I have played him myself, and did fair against him, but lost.. And the one takeaway is that he got a lot of action out of his stroke, and was *very* precise in his thin hits. He moved like a ghost, and smoothed in banks like they were nothing.

I had never heard of, nor seen him before and I pay at least minimal attention. Cudos to him
for what I'm sure is a lifetime achievement goal, and he should be proud!

Sure hope I wouldn't be dissed for whatever I may have done, or not done when I was a kid... on line.

A simple “oh wow didn’t realize that, guess I was wrong” would have sufficed here instead of the doubling down and implying you have some different interpretation of the word “threat” than the rest of the world. Profile pic checks out 🤣
