I can see why you asked about Mayan inspiration, but no, mostly southwestern Native-American designs..... conchos, steps, coral/turq/silver materials, etc.
Bill Stroud first utilized a step design in the buttsleeve in a box cue he made for Jim Rempe ca1970-71 right after Rempe won a large east coast tournament.
I have owned the Rempe box cue with the step-design in the buttsleeve for over 20 years, Bill and Rempe drew the design on the back of a
bank statement(?) while sitting at a table at the tournament, Bill sent me a copy of the hand drawings for my files years ago.
