A couple of Questions for the Cuemakers

What material do you refuse to use in your own cues as far as looks go?

What material do you most hate to work with, be it health reasons or just workability? (wood, inlay material, etc)

Myself, I hate the look of malachite, especially large pieces. But looks are subjective. Just wondering if there is anything you find so unattractive, you refuse to use it.

I prefer malachite but in smaller pieces like rings. I don't care for the look of buckhorn. I generally never get a cue built for myself. I start alot of them they always get sold before I finish them. I am thinking I will have to make a pink cue with polkadots so no one will want it. Chris.

If you build it for yourself, they will want it!

I've tried that a few times. They were not pink with polkadots but they were what I thought was ugly, They played just the way I wanted and always were sold before or after they were finished. Can't seem to hold onto anything I like when the price is right.

I don't like SS joints! I'll put them on my cues if that's what the customer wants, but I don't like them.

Marblewood..

I will not make another Marblewood cue......

Can't Breath when I cut it.

I'm using marblewood in one of my cues right now. It smells like feet!

I can't use ebony as much anymore. I hav ean allergic reaction everytime it gets in the air. Even with dust collection and a mask, I can't do it anymore.

I've had to do that too. I went through a spell where I could not keep my personal j/b for 2 days...someone always wanted MINE and offered too much. I've made me some VERY ugly j/b's for my personal use...made from scraps but 100% functional. Doesn't work...no matter how ugly if its my personal cue...someone will want it. A couple of years ago I swore to myself NOT to sell my "player" anymore either....you wouldn't believe the offers I've turned down for that beat up sneaky.

No stainless joints or brass inserts in my cues.:)

I'll take your in-laws off your hands for a month if you give it to me. LMAO :D Will that do it?

Can you please send your paypal info so I can put a down on the pink polkadots cue :D

I hate Ebony, or should I say Ebony hates me. Every time I set out to make a cue with Ebony, there is a guarantee, it will take me at least two pieces to get it right.

Nothing with the wood itself, but so far I've:

1. Set my milling machine for 8 points when I was cutting 6

2. Forgot to put the router on the taper bar and cut the entire piece down to .890

3. Tapered a piece on the shaft taper bar

I also hate Coring Ebony. Gets so hot no matter how slow I go. I use 2 size gun drills on it, so I'm taking less out each pass, but it still gets hot.

Chris,

My wife is telling me she might just out bid that Fish. She is pink with white polkadots crazy. She even wants to have her car repainted.

'I don't like the look of buckhorn'

OK, Them's fightin words...

But, seriously, if it is the 'mottoled' look, you're not alone.
There is a way to get it to look almost like ivory - nearly
translucent.

I agree Dale, when they whiten up perfect they are nice, but sometimes you get that one small spot that doesn't come clean, and It ruins the piece for Me. If I knew a piece was going to do that ahead of time, then I may would stick with the marble look, as that Looks better IMO. When they come out perfect though which is more then not, they do look like ivory. Wish they machined just like like too;) :D Greg

I have some that are speckled and marbled, not mottled. They look pretty nice to me as well.

I prefer the word "splotchy" to mottled for the pieces that do not look as nice. :p

Do you run air thru the coolant hole? It still gets warm, but not as bad as it does without it. But that does create a hellofa mess in the shop.:)

Typical gundrill set......

I ran across this picture awhile ago........notice the plastic elbow for dust collection and longer life for building cues.

Hope this helps..

Plenty of air. I still have a tough time with it, but I get through them.

Yeah, "splotchy" prolly is a better word for it.
But, I have used an old indian trick to transform them
into the world's best looking ferrule - he said modestly
