A couple quick things

Hey gentleman, it's been quite some time. I've settled into the University life and find myself playing pool like 2 hours a day, if not more. Recently won my
University tournament and beat the guys who had been hailed as the best on campus for the last few years.

I've also met some of the best ****ing players I have ever seen... For any of you Wisconsin shooters, Billy "The Kid" Lasee has become my mentor of sorts and gave me some tips to help me shoot even better. The same is true of Berry Chapman and a few other notable state players.

It's funny - finding another mentor in Green Bay has made me thankful to those players who have helped me in the past. ScottK - if you happen to read this a lot of what you showed me has improved my game gradually over time. Billy and Berry tell me I have very solid fundamentals, and a straight stroke (almost all thanks to the stuff you've showed me) so for that I am truly thankful Scott.

I am a much better player now from just a few tips from highly seasoned players. I also gamble small on games with better players so now I shoot a) without feeling pressure and b) always play my top tier game.

Anyway, onto a few questions:

* The tables on campus play very slow, and have a noticeable roll when you slow roll a ball. The pockets are also put on funky so balls will rattle a lot. Basically, I get about half the draw and follow I would on a normal table. Left and right English is also affected by some pretty rough rail cloth. I wonder if I can talk to a higher up at school and get the tables re-felted.

A few months ago I was asking about practice drills to improve my game and some of these drills are horrible to do on slow tables so I'm wondering how playing on a table like the one I currently play on will affect my game. Is there anything I should avoid doing on this table to not negatively affect other parts of my game? Is there anything to be weary of when playing on slower tables?

Thanks for the help guys, I look forward to hearing from all of you =)

Often, cloth plays slow because it's loose...
...if the cloth is decent, have it restretched.

Playing on difficult pockets with slow cloth tends to make me want to poke at the ball and shoot a bit too hard. I have more success when I really concentrate on stroking smoothly and using more of the cueball when I need more movement. Since it can be difficult to recover, planning your pattern carefully is very important. You can't afford to have to little angle or being on the wrong side of the ball as much as with faster cloth.

I've noticed this myself and consider it a benefit. My position play on a good table has improved dramatically and my stroke is almost always straight now. So yes, because of the slower table I now stroke smoothly, and straight while also playing better position.

To pt109...

The cloth is absolutely horrible. A professor told me that it hasn't been reclothed since they were originally put in and it's a shame because they're nice Brunswick tables. The cloth itself has so many marks on it - half the table is green, and the other half is blue or white from all the marks on it. The cloth is absolutely horrendous but I doubt they'll change it because most students (save for probably 5 that I know of) don't properly use the equipment and putting new cloth on the table is kinda like a waste of money to them. I'll see if I can get them changed though =)

Be the better man. Don't use the word felt...
Carry on my brotha

Actually, it could very well be felt I've played on a few times.....
....'cause I've seen a few players that were mad as hatters.

See if u can make a deal. Offer to have one table redone, but you get free practices time..and they promise to limit that table for players only....

I'm sure u will come out ahead in a year or two....or get some of the good players and see if they all wanna kick in money to play on good cloth..heck, an extra $400 on your student loans won't even make a dent

I wish I woulda read this before yesterday because I bought an unlimited pass yesterday for $100. I get free table time whenever the University open (so from like 8 am to 11 pm) and 4 tables need to be redone.

The only issue I'd see with them having the tables redone would be that they couldn't limit that table to certain players only because it's a school policy. Same thing with clubs/frats where they can't deny anyone entrance to the club based on XYZ skill or something which is why we can't have a legitimate pool club either because ignorant (I mean ignorant in the best way possible here) players would damage the higher end equipment.

Oh well - I'll still give them an earful and see what happens.

BTW, how's everybody in Chicago been RJ?
