Lots of speculation here about pool's rise and fall so many of you might want to read the condensedl history of one of the oldest billiard equipment producers in this country at this PAGE. Some enlightening tidbits to chew on.

I grew up playing on A. E. Schmidt tables and the first cue I ever paid over a $100 for was in 1973 when I bought one of their custom cues.

They used to make some nice stuff, but haven't seen anything they have produced in many years.

Pretty sure I was told that Paul Huebler was a salesman at A.E. Schmidt before he built his cues...A few Huebler fancier's on here may correct me if I'm wrong...

My table dealer recently started selling these tables. They're well made, reasonably priced and easy on the eyes. But, in the eyes of my dealer anyway, they don't measure up to a Gold Crown, even the new ones which come from China.

I believe that is correct, he did it for a number of years. Peoria was probably on his route.

A very interesting and fascinating slice of history. Thanks for the thread, I really enjoyed reading it.

There is an episode of Hands On History about A. E. Schmidt Co.
Unfortunately, the only Google references are to torrent sites.
