It seems like the only way I play good pool is if I'm concentrating. The only way I truly concentrate is if I'm nervous due to betting or a tournament. So, I came up with a practice game for 9 ball that makes you concentrate.
Basically, you play 10 frames of 9 ball and count how many shots you miss. Here are the rules:
After the break you can either play with the balls how they lay on the table or have cue ball in hand. If you leave them as is, you start your count at minus 1. If you go with ball in hand you start at 0. Let's say you go with ball in hand and you miss the 3 ball, now your total is 1. When you miss the 3 you leave it on the table and continue with the 4 ball. Every ball you miss adds a number to your score and you have to go on to the next ball. Once you reach the 9 ball you have to keep running out the balls you missed in rotation. So you keep total of the frames and the balls you missed. Same rules as 9 ball, if you miss your ball but some other ball is pocketed you continue your run without adding a point. If you scratch or foul and any time, add a point to your total. Obviously, a low score is best.
It really is a fun way to practice because you have to get the right angle all the time. It will also show you how much better your game is getting. Plus, it helps you break more accurately. It keeps your break relaxed and focused.
