was talking to a contractor one day, and he was talking about starting his own company, said it was a long time goal of his. he saw that I looked depressed, and said to me:

DONT YOU HAVE ANY GOALS TO REACH JUDO???? AND I JUST SAID NO:(:(:(:(

kind of messed me up a little I have to admit. why didn't I have any goals??

well its never to late boys. I start my first season of APA play next month, and I have set a goal for myself.

I want to become a APA RATED 7 PLAYER (im not really sure what a rated 7 player is, as I have never even seen a APA LEAGUE GAME YET. but I can reason that a 7 is a good player.

at 62, starting late in life, I know im behind the 8 ball a little, but I know if I set my mind to getting this goal, I can do it.

what I do have is lots of time, money, and desire to make it happen.

how good are APA 7s? can any 7s fill me in please? thanks, judochoke

Good luck - I'm 62 as well. When you say "starting at 62", do you mean starting to play pool at 62 after virtually never playing pool in your life, or starting to play league/competitive pool after having never played league/competitive pool in your life, but at least having played recreational pool for a good part of your life? If it's the former, I hope you have a lot of natural talent for the game.

APA 7 is very attainable. I would say, depending on the strength of your area, an APA 7 could be as bad as like a B- player. Maybe even a good C honestly. I don't play APA anymore and haven't for a while, but I wasn't what I would consider a good player when I first became a 7. Some 7's are obviously very strong, but to just attain the rating, you can get there without really being a super good player.

really started 9 months ago. took some lessons in the beginning, then just basically practicing by myself for 9 months. have a diamond 7 foot table in my family room, and im on it at least 3 hours a day, steady. have watched all of the videos on you tube, been on this forum for months just reading and learning.

went to a bar yesterday for free pool, hoping someone else was playing. but nobody was, so I just started hitting balls. I was not missing much, and the people at the bar were watching me play. I didn't talk to anyone, but it kind of hit me that im getting pretty good at this game.

{felt like Shane B for a few minutes):o:o:o:o:o:o:o:o

I think im on the right track. judo

Having reached 60 should have been one of the goals you HAVE accomplished. Goals are easy. Just don't set them to high. Say like getting out of bed before noon can be an easily accomplished goal. Eating some vegetables can be another one. There are so many goals that can be accomplished everyday!

Oh, here's another one, PLAY MORE POOL. Hey, that ones easy too!

I think I have zero natural talent for the game. but im working hard to overcome that.

I don't think there is a need for talent, in order for one to become a good player...that really is one of the neat things about pool.

Walk into pool rooms any you are likely to see any race, age, body type...we take em all.

To be a great player? That's a different matter.

I'm in.

Sounds like you're headed down the right track but are we talking a 7 in 8B or 9B? Just curious but I am assuming 8B.

And for reference:

And if you're looking for old photo's or video's of JazzyJeff87 this is what he used to look like.

My recommendations Judo is to put yourself on a three year plan (until age 65). Continue to practice daily three to four hours each day and occasionally throw in a long session of eight hours plus (preferably with an opponent). My prediction is that if you follow this regimen for three years (two year and three months more) you will be playing better than an APA 7 by then. You will probably be a solid B player or a shortstop as we used to say. And that's pretty damn good in my book. Better than 99% of the pool players on the planet!

To accomplish this goal, you will have to continue playing daily as you say you are (five to six days a week will suffice) and learn from the various videos available to you and take some lessons from a good instructor in your area. If you do all that for three years you will be one happy camper and a threat to beat just about anybody! How's that sound?

P.S. Do all of the above, and then you can come on AZBilliards and bark a little bit. Tell 'em that if they happen to be in your neck of the woods to stop on by and play some cheap sets. Ha Ha

Where are you starting from OP?
I went from weak 5 to a 7 in two years. The knowledge comes the whole time you play little by little but as far a shotmaking my arm just went from inconsistant to straight over a period of a couple months and then I went right up.
