Ain't no action in Longmont or Boulder. Maybe Foco if Johnny is there. If you live in the Denver area, and for some reason are trying to get out of town for some action, head south to the springs or Pueblo. Lot's of good players on either size table and new and unfamiliar faces are rare yet welcome down there.

This sounds about right. He did make mention of several places in NJ/NY. He definitely was familiar with the area.

CC is a very animated story teller. I should have paid more attention to the details, but at that point, i was trying to ignore him. One name i recall him dropping, as far as who he beat, was "Takahashi". When I asked him, "You mean Kunihiko, the champion from Japan?", he didn't comment any further and started talking about other stuff.

I remember Tony from when I use to live here back in 95. I just moved back a little over 2 years ago and am just now getting back to playing. I use to play with Curt Campbell, Mike O'Meara, Jimmy Myers and a few others
 
thats funny i met this guy out there too. my master's team (from boulder/longmont area) was playing a team from new york, and i had already played so i was sitting with some buddies watching our best player, nelson montierth, play. charlie was apparently friends with the team from new york and was sitting next to me. nelson lost hill/hill and charlie turned to me and said "that guy just beat the best player in colorado" not knowing i was on the team. nelson is really good (won a national singles apa 9 ball tourny in 2010) but not the best player in colorado, so i said "oh are you from colorado?" and then he starts telling me some stories about how he was one of the best players in colorado before he had his foot partially amputated and how he's out here cleaning up in the mini's and so on. funny coincidence.

ps there is some action in boulder. sundown saloon shitty barboxes we gamble there all the time!

I am not going to knock anybody but let's just say I WON'T gamble with Johnny and it's not because of his game. There is lots of action in Foco, that is where I live and you can get a game any night of the week and not with Johnny. Every once in awhile there is action in Longmont if Devon is there he likes to gamble and plays BCA leagues there, I think a guy on his team Aaron Westcott will play you too if you're feeling froggy.

Hes probably around 65 now, you ought to go down there and offer him a little spot. He might still play.... When Meachum was visiting me here in Ky. a few months back i think he told me charlie was playing in the golf game out of Antiques

I know all those guys from the late 70's, 80's, and 90's. I know you too. I owned and played out of the Galaxy Lounge. Hope you're well John. You used to play out of the Keg? This is Joe G (Jammer) I was Willie's bus partner in the Galaxy, we won a few Colorado Spings PL and High Country PL city championships there.

Eric, he was on Long Island quite a bit when I was cutting my bones out there. He is, as you say, a total piece of work. I could never quite tell if he took himself seriously, but I think my final and best guess at that is that he did.

He was always good for a laugh. I'd say he was probably a B+ player when I knew him, but in the mid 90's on Long Island, that was definitely good enough to get the cash against most of the crowd.

I remember he tried to get me to buy a case of wine from him or something? Almost no way I was even 21 at the time. Lol... Colorado Charlie. I will say this: I do think he meant well. He never exhibited any malice towards anyone.

Whats going on Joe, long time. Yes i remember you. Played a lot of years didn't we. Of course I remember the Galaxy lounge well. Brings back a lot of memmories thats for sure.
Yes i used to play out of the Keg for years and years with Dick Rayer, Kevin Knowles, Billy and Byron Henderson and Rick Leider. I think we had the same team for like 14 years
We won our HCPL championship out of Calamity Jans with Tony, his son Jerry, John Allen, Cedric, Me, and i'll have to find the pic to remember the other guys...lol.
When people out here bring up how APA and similar leagues suck,i tell them about the HCPL what a great league we had and how much fun it was.

I was in the Springs from July 93 until November 98 and knew Charlie Shootman well. I was stationed at FT. Carson. It was a very fun time in my life and Army career. I know he had some health problems a while back. Plan on visiting back there soon. Definitely not the guy describe in the opening thread/post.

The guy you are talking about is Charlie Lucero he was known as "Colorado Charlie" in the 70's and 80's and from what i know he was a top notch player. He found religion and quit for a number of years and then started playing again in the mid 2000's.

We may have played before. I was at FT Carson from August 1993 until Nov 1998. Spent 1996 in Bosnia. Played with and against all those guys you named. Great place to be at that time period. Was supposed to come back and work for Jim Barber, but stupidly moved to Tucson after retiring. Met a woman, Dammit.:smile:

I think you might know a different "Colorado Charlie". The guy I met lived in the NJ/NY area, at one time.

A couple of guys on this thread seem to have pegged the guy i was describing. Seems like my first impression of "Charlie" was correct :frown:

Eric...You're correct. I can guarantee that the "Colorado Charlie" that we're talking is absolutely not Charlie Lucero, who was from Pueblo or C. Spgs...not Boulder. Our 'Charlie' is quite the character, huh? LOL Interesting that Steve (a real pro player) ran into him too!

bubbles24...Different guy. Besides, Karl Koffee was, and still is, better than Charlie ever was. Karl continues to win national singles championships out in Vegas almost every year.

Being that Steve Lipsky was from Long Island, originally, it is coincidental, but not absurd. LI has a smaller pool community than "the city". It seems like all the poolplayers on LI seem to know each other.

About the case of wine thing, I don't want to unfairly paint the guy with that story. He wasn't looking to push it on an underage kid. I was "one of the guys" in the poolroom, and I'm sure he asked everyone. I just thought it was bizarre because at least in those days and in that region, wine was looked at as more of an older person's drink. It was totally out of left field that he asked me, and I just remember laughing at such an absurd question.

Anyway, just wanted to mention a funny anecdote, not hurt the guy's image. He's done enough of that himself with all his pool stardom stories... :)
