is this WPBA U.S. Open that just concluded actually a legitimate U.S. Open? or is it just another WPBA tournament that happens to be dubbed the U.S. Open?

It's the same field as all WPBA events. Also, you have to be a member of the WPBA, so it's not really "open".

I don't think that it is any different than any other WPBA event. There may be more spots open for players to qualify through the satellite system the WPBA uses but as far as being an "open" where anyone can walk up and put in their money to play, I don't think so.

Don't you know you are not allowed to question the truthfullness or wisdom of the promoters of pool tournaments on this forum. You are hereby banished to the *****ing and moaning thread, LOL! I'm sure there are only 64 women capable of competing at a high level at the U.S. "Open", and they are all members of the WPBA top sixty-four.

Good question, DCP.

In so many ways, this is like any other WPBA event, though the prize fund is a little bigger. Same ranking points are available as any other WPBA events, and all WPBA touring pros are guaranteed a spot.

In one way, however, it's different than the others. That's because the access to qualifiers is far greater. A winner of any state championship event on the regional tour scene gets in to the Women's US Open. State championships are held year round all over the country, giving most ladies a shot at qualifying regardless of where they live. the same cannot be said of all WPBA events.

Show up and play should not be the definition of an "open" event. What other sport (no, poker is not a sport) allows anyone to just show up and play in a premier event? Equal access should be the measuring stick, and the Women's US Open does a decent job of ensuring equal access to, at very least, female players living in America.

The system is far from perfect, but the most worthy are rarely left out of this event unless they skip the qualifiers.

As I've posted before, I believe the Women's BCA open, the Women's US Open and WPBA Nationals should all award more ranking points than other WPBA tour stops. Until this happens, it will be difficult to argue that the WPBA organization views these events as more important than others.

To me, the premier event on the WPBA calendar remains the BCA Open, which always features an elite international field.

It is a far cry from the true US Open that Barry Berman runs every year. Even with a slightly higher prize fund and some more opportunity for qualifiers it is definately not nearly in the same league of the mens event they attempt to appear comparable to. I would lean heavily towards the "just another WPBA event" side of the fence.
