A little tip about tips

I went to a new billiards store that just opened in my area today because I was looking for phenolic tips for my break cue, unfortunately they didn't have any but the guy did give me some helpful advice and here's what he told me to do:

1. Take a hard tip of your choice sand it but DON'T SHAPE IT leave it flat.

2. Take a dot of superglue no more, no less and run it around the side of the tip, wipe off any excess and let it harden and should aid you with your jump shots.

And voila no more need for a phenolic tip.

i heard that years ago, i cant jump so i dont know, I had a friend who jmps good tell me it worked ok, not as good as the real thing.

It won't even jump half as well as a phenolic tip....trust me.;)
If you want a phenolic tip I wouldn't suggest looking in a retail store. If you don't have a local cuemaker then there are a large number of people here that would be happy to sell you one.

no offense but that idea is whacked!!! Maybe the sides of the tip will not mushroom as bad but you are still using the heart of the tip for the shot. I use a moori quick tip and can't jump with my full cue because it is still too soft. So tell your retailer to stop lying to you!!!!:o

I'm with Varney on this one. Superglue may help at first, but it will most likely break down over time, and do so unevely. So eventually you will have a hard side and a not so hard side to the tip yielding inconsistent results.

Considering phenolic tips are $1.50 from Meuller's and $3-$4 from eBay (already shaped), I'm not sure the superglue "trick" gets you anything...

I replaced my phenolic with the G-10 & find that, despite the fact that it is harder, I'm getting better CB control, easier chalking, & greater explosion of the rack. I can't wait to experiment with the G-11.

Super Glue Does work, Ive done this for a long time, it was useualy on Elk Masters, at the time all we had were 14mm and when you cut them down to fit the ferrule, they would stretch like an accordian, I mashed the tip as hard as I could, and applied alot of superglue to the sides, it worked, and the tips lasted a long time, I have also done this to keep Triangles from getting fuzzy on the sides, and it works great.. you do have to be careful, as superglue will stain some ferrules and you will have to remove material to eliminate those stains.

thinking about this sine my first post, my friend who did this is a super strong player and jumps ral powerfully, he can get the rock up there, not very accuratly, he was playing around with the super glue thing and I remember him saying that it it was a pain because he had to keep reconstructing the tip the SG would chip away or crack, it was a waste of time, it does work for the first couple shots. kinda. just buy the real thing

Are you serious? I don't know what you are using to install the tips...but your tools are way too dull. If you make the tip "stretch" then you've ruined it and you should cut it off & start over. Superglue is no cure for ruining the tip.

Exactly....

why settle for that alterative if you're able to buy yourself a phenolic. unless you're extremely poor, then go for the superglue. otherwise, just buy the damn tip thing.

Yes very, the owner ask me to get rid of them and I did, I installed a bunch, all were house cues, I would NEVER EVER do this on my cue... When all those BIg elk Masters were gone, we went to Triangle, and Lepro, to use on the house cues, I did all of them by hand sanding the sides of the tip, I didnt have any sharp cutting tool, I just used what he had. I would have just cut the tips off but they were house cues, bad ones at that, Everyone that comes in has thier own cue, mainly they were just for looks, and the tip jobs I do look very good. The very little use they recieved alllowed them to last a very long time without any maitenence.

Would I do it again, not on your life, but at the time it worked, and worked very well.

No, I wouldnt recomend super glue, what I did was to try to help the owner save a couple bucks, one of his buddies gave him a box of 14MM Elkmasters, whitch were left overs from boxes of assorted, so they were basicaly free. and I used them all.

I will buy a couple of phenolic tips but I was only passing on some information that I thought might have been of some interest to people who find that phenolic tips are not widely available where they are or if they can't get access to the internet to buy them.

Sorry for breathing I'll keep my mouth shut in future.

no harm done. just sayin' don't experiment on your cue tip if you're don't want to mess your cue or doing something that you might regret. from where I had been, they had that kind of tip supergluing practice. it works alright, but not for a long time. expect some chipping and cracks after sometime. not a good sight.
