A SPECIAL RULE

This a hypothetical question. The top 100 players in the world are invited to play and they all show up. At the players meeting they are required to check their equipment at the door and told that at each table there would be two generic house cues laying on the table. That is the special rule. They all play with the same cue.
Would the odds makers change their odds because of this rule or would the odds stay the same?

good question

My guess is that some players would be wrecked by a cue change while others would play very close to their normal game. Some people and their games are more equipment oriented than others.

Put another way, Earl against any of the top five players from the Phillipines, I'd bet the farm against Earl in this format.

I don't think you would have to go to the top 5 players from the Phillipines. A player like Townsend might be the favorite with that rule.

Winning comes down to great shot conceptualization, a strong mental game and great execution. I think this change would have no impact on who chose the right shots, and those with the strongest mental games will remain so, The difference would be in execution, but I don't think the difference would be that great,as every serius player has played with a house cue at some point.

As the oddsmaker, I wouldn't change the odds.

Late addition: Not long ago, Mike Sigel predicted that the use of a slow, nappy cloth would give the old timers an edge on the IPT. As we now know, the old timers were, as a group, very unsuccessful on the IPT. Whatever the equipment and conditions, the cream rises to the top.

The problem is that a lot people play with a wide variety of stuff.

What weight (guys on either extreme would have problems)?
What tip hardness (ditto)?
Assuming the cue was conventional, the Pred users and/or "spinners" (me) would be disadvantaged.

Like anything else. They would adjust and the cream would rise.

I think that this would pose alot of problems for some players while others (the more talented) would be able to adjust. For example, there is a local player where I live that is an "A" player. He beats the 9 ball ghost with ease and is a favorite over the 10 ball ghost. I have seen him beat the 9 ball ghost with a Sledgehammer cue (breaking and shooting with this cue). That takes alot of talent to be able to adjust like that. I dont think that all of the players could do it, so I think playing with the house cue would make a difference for most.

where ya' from "southpaw"? we have a player around Erie,PA who can do this also....the spot he'll give a lesser player is he'll play you with his sledgehammer cue and you can use whatever you wish...the only problem is he'll still crush you, even with the sledgehammer cue!!!! I know I've taken a beating or two by this! lol
