A Thought For Next Year’s Mosconi Cup ...

Dear Gentle Readers,

How about adding a girls’ division? Not a girl added to the team, but a team of girls. One on each side of the briny.

Benefits?

> It would showcase even more incredible talent.

> The three ensuing competitions -- boys, girls and coed doubles -- would refresh the formula. And would generate a lot of chatter about the coaches’ pairing decisions.

> There would be more matches per day to accommodate the additional players. Thus more value to the PPV and live audiences.

> Girls have, generally speaking, more personality. Many would present and interview better.

> For the most part, the girls would make more spectacular entrances. One or two notable exceptions on the boys’ side!

> More for the live spectators to cheer about.

(Of course we all realize that there is, at heart, probably only one reason to incur the additional expenses -- if it significantly increases the viewership for Matchroom.)

Uninformed, ill-conceived postulations are my life,

Sunny

Well, for one... It is an America vs Britain thing, and I would surmise that we have no women that could come close to competing against the British female snooker players.. :-(

Creating a female version of the Mosconi Cup sounds great on paper, however I agree with ShortBusRuss that the U.S. players wouldn't be able to compete with their British counterparts.

I feel the upcoming Queen's Cup would eventually overshadow any newly-created team-based female competition anyways.

If the QC is successful in Asia this could be THE standard for female billiard competition.

The Queens Cup is another CW joke. Loraine? Get real. She is taking money from someone that belongs there. Johnnyt

I love the idea of this thing, but it does need to have the best players there, and I can't think of any US women players that can win in a long set against the Euro and Asia players. Can't fade this type of game - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ifg88EpcV70

Kind of off topic, but I think it would be cool to have an annual mixed Scotch doubles pro-am.

So you would have teams like Jeanette Lee and her hubby and SVB and his mother, etc.

My memory is vague about it but I recall hearing that Barry Hearn said a very long time ago that he was through with organizing pool events for women and he seemed to have held true to that. I believe that came after some events that Matchroom organized maybe some 20 years ago that involved women. I can't recall if they were mixed doubles or mixed team matches, but something like that.

Women are allowed to play in it since 2011. Johnnyt

PS: Not many show up though. Monica cashed this year.

Wrong Barry you are thinking of Johnny, not the US open Barry.

Barry Hearn the owner of matchroom sport and the 3 most successful pool events on the planet, who pays the players to play i must add.

Opps, I read it wrong. you're right. Johnnyt

I don't think they will try to make 2 mosconi cups because it would be viewed as
sort of 'diluting' the year's Big Event. Not knocking the females, just that's how our
male-dominated p̶o̶o̶l world would probably look at it.

But an all-female invitational world tournament can be successful.
CW might be universally hated on here but he's no dummy at promoting events.
I believe they make money and everyone gets paid.
So yes, under an invitational format woman like Shanelle get invited
and you fill more seats than if someone less boobalicious got there through merit alone.

Of course, this is if you define successful as something that doesn't lose money and maybe
could get on TV someday. Not so much as "getting the best women together in a tournament
so see who brings home the cheese."

Johnny, why do you say the Queens Cup is a joke? The event hasn't event taken place yet. Shouldn't we give it a chance to be successful before knocking it?
