abalone or mop veneers??

Yes you could if you got it in sheets....but a veneer is so thin that the material really wouldn't show that great. Plus its not the most structurally sound of materials it can have tiny fractures in the material.
I tell you what I dont know if you could get it in thick enough pieces to do it but....
If you did RE-CUT points and used that as the "veneer" you could make it double or triple wide (or whatever width) and it would show very nice as you would have enough surface area to actually see the details in the material.
Sure would be interesting to try if the material can get gotten a hold of....may have to give it a swing one day......you can do it with ivory so I'm sure you could do it with that too.....especailly if you somehow impregnated it or something to that effect.

I brought this up with a friend of mine who is in the cue buisness as well as myself.....we both came to the conclusion the only good way to do it is as an inlay.....if you have a cnc then it would be pretty easy to inlay a false venneer on the outside of your last point....now I am far from an expert and maybe one of the more knowladgeable cue makers on here will chim in......but thats the only way I can see to do it without running into structural and cost issues.......I am interested to here opinions on this subject as well.
yep....thats the real issue....it can be done for sure but the question is
"will it hold up?"
the CNC would def do the trick tho.....I think this could be a passable design using MOP....but using abalone IMOP would be hard to make look good....imop the abalone is more like turquoise & malachite.....its just very rare that I see cues with it that don't look goofey, but when and if its designed correctly it "can" look good......

I have used abalone extensively through the years. If you want to glue it to the side of a v-groove type of point in a thin sheet the thickness of a veneer it will certainly work, but it will look horrible. What you would see is the end of the abalone and would lose all the brilliant colors. Now if you want to make it look like a veneer, but not really be done in the normal v-groove fashion then you could make it look really nice. Sheldon does this alot with various materials and it will work with abalone just fine. Do a search of Sheldons posts and you should find pictures of how he does it.
