ABC trip report

Flew to Vegas after being home just a week after Derby to meet with Mark, Don, David and Ozzy, face time so much more motivating and productive.

Educated myself on Bonus Ball probably a week prior to coming out, not as complicated as one might think, new is always new and I thoroughly enjoyed the playoffs, live and streamed. Congrats Thorsten, Ralph & Jesse.

Had the pleasure of making a new friend in Mike Brown whom I played some BB with at Best Billiards, 2hrs of play and at least 2 more hrs of chat lol. Personally I like playing and watching the game and think it has a chance. Lil awkward around the arena as some players/friends of mine still think we’re in competition with them and are unfortunately a lil distant with me. BUT some are starting to ask questions and get a clearer idea of what we’re actually doing (building a self sustaining tour for all of us) One player in particular is Brandon Shuff who I finally got to hang out with for a bit. I suggested that he ride with me over to the CA events and we’ve been having a good and productive time so far, besides him finally catching whatever sickness I’ve had for last 2 weeks (constant dry cough at night?)

One last piece of business before leaving Vegas, nice phone interview with our man Mike Howerton on the American Billiard Club for the American Billiard Radio all for AMERICAN POOL lol Mike makes these interviews easy and I thank you for that Mike and everything else you guys do. We start at the 49:30 mark; www.americanbilliardradio.com

First stop after seeing a beautiful sunset over the mountains staring me in the face is Gary’s Billiards in Victorville, met Jackie and played some AR with Brandon, instant fan, too much of a fan with the “Absolutely no luck” thing, he like most pro players seems to take things to the extreme, lol Hopefully Gary and Jackie can talk 6 players to come take on Nick Spano and John Schmidt but they don’t seem hopeful :frown: Nice room and I played pool for the first time in many years with a cool slight breeze coming through the open door and over me as I’m down on a shot :smile: And it was dry air that didn’t effect the play of the table OR am I so out of stroke that I couldn’t tell?

Back on the road to fortunately catch Alex the owner of Stix in Rancho Cucamonga in the house late. Very nice person and room owner, the room looks gr8 AND they just renewed a long term lease :smile: Alex is going to try and get 8 players to compete in ARCS III that starts first week in March.

Back in the car on to Pasadena where Corey Harper did a gr8 thing of inviting 10-12 people to his Billiard Academy to meet with us. Was soo nice to have people show up in an effort to help us build a tour for our game. Corey has a great facility that serves as store front/training facility. He works very hard to promote his business and our game while fighting the same financial situations many of us do but keeps it first class all the way. I want to thank everyone who came down and then went back to their local clubs fully intent on getting at least 8 players on board! Chris Santana said “Is okay if I get 3 groups of 8?” ahh if I could only hear more of that.

Over to Swanny and my first time (I can’t believe that) to Hard Times Bellflower. Can you imagine all the action and players that have been here over the years? Dave Hemma is heading up the show of 192 players so we won’t be pestering him about getting 8 players from here, at least not until Sunday night ;) Brandon doing a gr8 job spreading the word and helps me make some good contacts and positive impression on his fellow players and fans.

Did some commentary with POV pool which is always cool, Daniel is busting his butt as usual. Unfortunately a big topic of the JAY SWANSON MEMORIAL is green fees and yes I agree they are out of control but the amazing thing is how many players, pro players don’t even understand that this has been happening for years. I asked one player what do you think happens when a flier says $1000 added based on 64 players, $15 green fees, $5 tour fee? He couldn’t give me the answer and used previous ignorance as an out "I don't pay attention to that stuff". Message to all tournament hosts, please refrain from this format, I would rather you not advertise the $1000 added *based on x amount of players and simply lower every entry fee by $20 and go with the 100% pay back, FREE green fees, please come play. If you can afford and want to add money, we thank you in advance.

Now other than the green fee crap I am feeling and I really mean this, I am picking up some Good Vibrations :smile: Its totally just a feel I’m getting from these Southern California peeps, could have something to do with leaving a white New England and now smiling at the sun in a T shirt but we’re feeling good vibes for sure.

Hard times has the toughest set of tables in a room I have ever seen. Corey Harped said “Welcome to Cali Joe” Nice! As much as I love to bet on Mika in the finals I just couldn’t pull the trigger this time. Everyone had Dennis as the favorite and rightfully so but I’ve been around Mika a lot and when he goes deep he goes all the way more than most but these tables kind of throw a monkey wrench in the equation. I know Dennis was very comfortable so me save money this time, congrats to both and all involved, 192 players in 2 days, lol. Let’s get back to telling more Swanny stories.

Monday over to Danny K’s, Super cool place. 9-10 on the richter scale and was upset I didn’t get to meet the man himself who actually promotes a game called continuous rotation; 15 ball rotation, 1 point per ball and when you miss I get ball in hand, total offense and off we go. The room is gr8 and we stay for the afternoon hoping for Danny to come in. I’m spotted on the outside deck by Adam Kroll and his road dog Mitch Ellerman from AZ. I make myself easy to spot with the all American flag jacket ;) So they pull in and I play some AR with Adam and Mitch while Brandon plays some 1 hole with the local lovers of the game. Adam and Mitch are going to try and get some AZ players on board for Series III. Mike H has also offered to try and get a couple of groups of 8 on board, COME ON AZ, you guys love your pool and there’s no reason we can’t get at least the top 16 players in the state going? Small video of Danny Ks on my facebook for Danny K’s https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10201540224571437&set=vb.1351791311&type=2&theater

After having my best meal yet, Ribs, salad and sweet potato fries ala Danny K’s we’re back to Hard Times to sweat Daniel Bush vs Lee Brett. Had to give Brandon some of my ribs as he’s on that whole let’s get healthy eat salad thing lol good job bro. We show up with the score around 5-5 or something like that and I think I have now jinxed Daniel as I watch him lose 10 out 11 racks on the last two balls of each rack. Table is brutally tight and a lil humid, Daniel is running the stream and feeling the heat and I’m feeling for both of them. Lee is winning and is still fidgety Lee sweating it hard. From there on out Lee got to loosen up a bit but Daniel could never recover.

Part 2
Pound some pavement Tuesday morning with House of Billiards Sherman Oaks and Butera’s Billiards(if Sal gets the 8 he wants or we talked about this may be the strongest 8 in the country) and then 6-7hrs Drive to Sacramento. Wanted to get over to House of Billiards where Taek Chang has volunteered to head up 8 players out of there, just didn’t have time to get that far west, sorry bro BUT I ain’t left Cali yet? Unfortunately I couldn’t make the drive up the coast I was hoping for and had to do the i5N thing :frown: as Brandon was playing in the Chuck Markulis memorial one pocket event starting 1pm Wed Hard Times Sacramento. This place may have just become my favorite pool room in the country, absolutely love it and I’ll post some pics asap. Rooms is split into 4 separate areas; big seating area centralized with restaurant pro shop, regular playing table to the left side of main room along with some bar tables, tighter tables to right side around 24 tables or so out front and then there’s the back room, the real room :smile: with 8 tight tables, one streaming and the big staired bleachers all along the back wall we all love to lounge on while sweating matches. Or in some cases (Robb Saez, sleep on after a 20hrs drive with Justin Bergmen lol)
I meet up with our infamous Kenny Schulman who as usual is very helpful. Also got to meet Bart Mahony who is a long time pool nut and I’ve only met via FB, good good conversations.

Brandon and Corey have to play a second round match so I decide to sweat a lil and I got more than my share of it, lol. They’re 2hrs deep and its 6pm and I ain’t eatin today! Gotta get some popcorn for this one. Thought a race to 3 would go by fairly quick but these guys are strong and aren’t giving each other sheeit. Corey up 2-1 and Brandon winning like 6 or 7-1 and the game takes about 2hrs more from there. Corey won this battle and I got well more than my FREE sweaters fee. There’s another good note, I believe this is $2000 added $60 entry and no green fees, NICE, much nicer than $3000 added $80 entry and $2o green fees ;) Anyways gr8 match by both players.

Had a nice conversation with Corey as he is one of the few players that does ask questions and wants to understands things before he judges them and I LOVE to share exactly what it is we’re doing because I know most players don’t pay attention unless someone puts up this big shiny display that says we’ll make you rich, come see lol. Besides Mike Dechaine and Tony Crosby playing in the American Rotation Championship Series Brandon and Corey are the only high profile players I can think of that express true desire to help (I get yessed a whole bunch lol) Corey has some concerns or questions over fees and lack of player say and I understand. I explain that we’re not trying to build a product that gets rich off fees from players and that our plan is to build the Nike (Web.com) tour for pool and present a product that is worthy of both inside and outside the industry sponsorship. I don’t have much to offer him in amount of player control right now but we do agree that if we finally unite 512 players we’re pretty sure they would have a strong say in things.

That brings us to today where I’m feeling a little more sick than usual, hence the extra time in the room to update you all. Had to get Brandon over there for a 10am match which is like a 7am T time for a golfer lol He’s over there grinding it out in races to two 1 loss side and I’m over here deciding Reno or recap S Cal? Still have to head over to San Fran, San Jose maybe Modesto over next few days but still have to decide if it’s going to be Reno or stay in CA for last 4-5 days? The goal of this trip is to get 8 CA rooms on board for Series III starting first week in March!

Random updates;
Ken Jenning starting American Rotation Championship Series in OK area  Ken has worked hard to bring AR to some lower level players which I’m ALL for. I have had a few requests from people asking to start some handicapped versions but our main concern is to NOT let the same thing happen with AR as has happened with other handicapped things where people get punished for improving! I just can’t stand watching people improve then get barred or over handicapped, wth people. Ken is working on some type of even playing field where people can gradually move up and I’m trying to work of the same type of rewards program. We’ll entertain any thoughts you may have for this but please lets motivate and reward players for improving.

Two groups of women have now formed their own American Rotation competitions  First the group out of Bumpers Billiards and now my stinkin lol wife has the itch to hit pool balls again and has rounded up the troups! Not sure if the family can afford 2 pool players and one golfer? These ladies are organizing themselves, scheduling and collecting fees themselves and are simply going for the competition and probably 100% payback. I offered to let the 2 group winners meet up in Vegas at our next nationals in conjunction with the BCAPL nationals July but they politely declined but I can see it coming ladies ;)

CANADA  our man here on AZ Gerry Williams is action and has taken action in Ottawa. Gerry has 2 groups of 8 ready to go for Series III. You have no idea how happy that makes me, players helping players by taking action. I’m going to try and reach out to Montreal asap but I’m a lil preoccupied so if anyone has a room or player connection there let’s move on it! Where’s my man Luc at nowadays?
John Morra is planting seeds in Toronto  John played an exhibition match with Thorsten at Derby for us. With the score at 81-79 John going to 100 and his break John came with a perfect 20 to win.

American Rotation group page on FB, please join www.facebook.com/groups/210936945759205

Eric Townsend has been constantly updating out new website (yea finally professional looking) and I do my best to coordinate with him but it’s tough out here to juggle. Check it out at; www.AmericanBilliardClub.com or www.AmericanRotation.com

Our man Andrew Cleary put his talent to work in creating this nice lil vid for us;

ABC will be built, it may take s a little longer than I would have liked (I’m missing my fam)but the united format works and we will build it for the players and for the industry. If you love pool and want to see it take a positive step forward please make an effort to get your local 8 on board. They don’t have to be 8 champions; simple people who love the game love this format. Along with being one of the 512 players that will make history, they’ll be happy with the time they spend doing it!

It was great meeting you Joe

I'm dusting off my old car sales skills and going into House of Billiards full force this weekend to see if I can recruit 7 others to join the club. Besides myself I've got 2 likely commits, but I really want to see if I can get some of the stronger players in the room to join. It'll be hard to tear them away from their regular one-pocket action, but this league is really a no-lose proposition for any and all pool players.

I really hope this blows up for you Joe.

Car sales skilz :) I no gots.

Here's a lower level player that's going to ask higher level players to play in a nonhandicapped 15 ball rotation event lol This is going to be like me telling Cliff Joiner at Derby "Cliff if you lose in this game I'm telling you to play with my friend I'm going to give you all your money back" lol they're going to look at him like he has 3 heads. Taek if I exit via SCal instead of Reno I will stop by, thanks bud.

Excellent write-up, Joe. Sweet potato fries and all that! :D

It sounds like California is a gold mine for pool happenings. Well done! :cool:
