? about 38" Lathe

hi,

I want know if a lathe of 38" is recomended for tapering shafts and butts.
I ask this because I am tapering shafts wiht 42"lathe and not problem but a friend want sell to me a new 38" lathe and I dont know if I will work with this lathe in good conditions..I have my doubt

what's the distance between centers?
with a dead center in headstock and a live center in tailstock

You have to go and measure the lathe yourself. Many lathes give the measurements without a chuck and and to the front of the tail piece without a tool. You can sometimes cheat and have your tail piece hanging a little off the end to get some more distance between centers. I would bet that lathe will be a very close fit, if not to short to turn shafts. What is the lathe by the way?
 
distance between centers is 38 inches aprox. with a dead center in headstock and a live center in tailstock

that's more than enough
mine is 36"

That should do it for you then. I have an old Atlas 36 that I use to turn shafts on sometimes.

Them I will buy it, I think that metal lathe wiht 38" between centers and like new for $400 is a good purchase...

It would be worth it if it didn't even run.... Lathes make great trim ring presses.
