Although in the credits Whitakers character is named Amos, I always thought Eddie's character said it as a slur. In the movie there is no formal introduction, but Amos does refer to Newman's character as Eddie. I was never aware there was a published follow up to the Hustler, so I could be completely wrong.
As far as weight... I noticed Amos sweating and huffing pretty hard as he strutted out the door with 6 or $700 of Eddie's (heavy) money.
