About the "no earplugs" rule at the US Open 10Ball event

I have no problem with someone wearing ear plugs to drown out noise. All I'm saying is that almost everyone should be used to it by now. Noise around a pool hall is nothing new. And let's face facts, pro events aren't anywhere near as noisy as a pool hall on a Friday night. Haha!

Why is it when someone misses something certain people have to be total dicks and get snotty? Is it so hard to just point out the miss and leave it at that. So rude.

I apologize.
No harm intended.
I just get all fired up cause i absolutely hate repeating myself, and sarcasm is my default reaction.

Mully, why is it tacky/low class to listen to an mp3 player while shooting? I see a double standard here. You're talking about the pool hall atmosphere being something we should all get used to... full of people yelling, drunks, weekend warriors, etc.

How is it they get a pass, but the guy wanting to listen to his preferred music so it plays quietly in his own ears and won't affect anyone else... that's just RUDE?

This isn't directed specifically at you Mully, but I've been dying to say it and this post is as good an excuse as any - I half think some of the people who sweat earphones are bothered by the fact that they're just not important enough to merit more of the other guy's attention.

We'd all like to think the other guy is silently admiring our nice shots and learning from us. Sucks to play great and the other guy can't be bothered to even glance up and see any of the shots in a beautiful runout. (like I kinda wish the other guy wasn't just sitting in his chair texting while I make 5 hero shots in a row). The guy with the mp3 player is focused on himself and the table only and for some people it drives them up the wall that he's not giving them any attention (which he's not supposed to while at the table).

Some maybe even think he's not giving the game his full attention and is choosing to play with a distraction rather than giving 100% (like one of those dudes who shoots one handed while propping up the cell phone with his shoulder).

Personally, I couldn't care less if they are watching me play. I'm not there to give lessons. It's got nothing to do with that. I guess it's because I've spent most of my pool playing life in Japan. People here are considerate of others. You don't see people pissing and moaning about shots, calling fouls, sharking etc... They just don't do it. They respect the other player. I honestly have never seen anyone shooting with an iPod going. It just wouldn't happen here. If it did God only knows what someone would say to them for doing it.

Also, people want pool to be taken seriously and to get big money like other sports. You don't see Tiger Woods strapping on his iPod before he tees off at the Masters. You don't see NBA players wearing them onto the court. Baseball players, tennis players, the list goes on. But, when you try to tell people in pool to improve the image by dressing nicer, combing their hair, no smoking at the table, stop sharking other players, stop mudballing, stop hustling etc... they just get mad. Pool will never ever in my lifetime be taken seriously enough to grab big sponsors. And the only people to blame are ourselves.

I get that you feel japan is polite, and that you're polite, and that wearing the ipod is impolite. I just don't get why it's impolite. If it's got nothing to do with you then who's it got to do with? The guys at the adjacent table? The guy at the bar? Is the player being rude to himself?

I mean, we had this talk in another thread I think... some stuff is considered rude for practical reasons, and other stuff is out of long tradition. But I don't see either applying to wearing an ipod while shooting pool. Who's negatively impacted? People claim they have to work harder to get the other guy's attention, but say he's a real player and knows what he's doing and doesn't need you to tell him what's what? Is he still being rude?

re pool getting big and popular - you're right, Tiger doesn't wear an ipod when he tees off. And nobody is in the background carrying on a loud drunken conversation while he's teeing off, and they aren't blasting music from a speaker 10 feet away either. If they were doing all of these things, I wouldn't fault tiger for choosing to put on an ipod. Especially since, as his opponent, it has zero impact on me or how I play my own game.

Another reason I switched to 3cushion. I don't know how it is over there but loud music and noise don't fly in a 3C room in this country. They'll kick you right out for making unneccesary noise.

As for the iPod. In my opinion it's the same as wearing a cap or hat inside. I was brought up to take my hat off indoors. Those wires hanging off the side of someones head would irritate the sh1t out of me. If I did have to say something to my opponent and had to repeat myself because of ear phones it would piss me right off. Also, people say it's to drown out the noise.......you're pumping music straight into your ear canal..... And it's going to have to be pretty loud to drown out the background noise so what's the point?

As for your earlier post, I don't think the weekend warriors should get a pass. I'd like to ask them to leave. I'd also like to take out any type of jukebox and put some kind of stop on the stereo going past 3 or 4. I would love it if a pool hall had medium level blues or jazz all the time..... And metal is my preferred genre, but not while playing pool. I can dial out the background noise though, I'm just used to it being there.

I'm wondering here...has anyone ever had to play ...say.. Earl Strickland ? Cool enough away from the table but will beat you to death during a match if he decides to start talking to the crowd or himself. I think earplugs should be allowed. I was at the U.S. Open where I personally had to call Scott "the Shot'' over to quiet a spectator trying to shark the guy on the next table over. Since there will always be one in the crowd. Thank God for earplugs !!!

Eddie,
Do you know if the U.S. Open (9 ball or 10 Ball) allow the use of Ear Plugs?
thanks,

Yeah, I've played Strickland.
He wouldn't shut up.
Funny cause at the time, i wasn't using earplugs, but was listening to music on these big headphones, so when he wouldn't shut up, i went to my bag, and took my player out with the headphones and put them on.

Then he started to bittch about me having headphones on and how they told him at some tournaments years ago, that if he used them, he would be banned, etc etc.

Eventually, i just stopped shooting and asked him if he was ever going to shut the F up.
He and all the spectators just looked at me in silence.

And then i told him that the only reason i put them on was cause he wouldn't shut the F up and that if he were CAPABLE of keeping it shut, then maybe, he wouldn't have to bittch about me using them cause i wouldn't have them on in the first place.

He didn't like that.

Did you win?

So i guess the powers that be at the BCA have no reply to this?
It figures. Not that i wish the BCA any malice or harm as i happen to think they run a great show and put on a terrific event.
But seriously? This rule belongs in the toilet with the rest of the sh!tty rules.

The silence is deafening <---pun

What does the BCA have to do with the U.S. Open 10 Ball Championship? I thought it was put on by Mark Griffin's company, CSI, not the Billiard Congress of America.

Now I'm confused (for a change, lol).

Mark Griffin owns the BCA Pool League and for the record, the U.S. Open 10 Ball Championship hasn't been going on for a long time......

Mark is a very fair guy. He likes to run his own show but it's always a good one. If the rules need tweaking, I'm sure he'll get it done. If they don't, he won't.

I would love to hear from any of the entities who make the rules on ear plugs. I am ready to offer my personal experience.

Did anyone attend the US Open 10 Ball PLAYERS MEETING?

Was the 'no ear plugs' brought up by the players?

The US Open 10 Ball was sanctioned by the WPA and to be sanctioned the tournament has to follow the WPA rules and have a certain amount of Refs and WPA officials in attendance.

Anyone attend?

Oh well, there goes everones free gift i was going to include with every pair of ass weights ordered

I'm gonna need to order me a set of those.
I mean, if you can't use earplugs, what else besides ass weights is there?

So, my ear plugs for my Ipod offends people. If they are banned then on the same grounds we need to ban tee shirts, jeans, people with tatoos, long hair or anything else that might offend anyone. If you are offened this easily then why do you even go to a pool hall?

Foam earplugs do not prevent conversations.
