ABS collar and epoxy

I plan on fitting an ABS joint collar to a cue. I have just been searching around on google and found that epoxy does not bond great with ABS, what are your guys experiences with this?
Thank you

Might go for phenolic then

Phenolic is probably a better choice for a joint collar. But ABS should
glue fine with epoxy. I've done a few buttcaps and had no problems.

Are you perhaps thinking of Acetal(Delrin)?

No, I found a thread on some website with a couple of people saying bonding ABS with epoxy can be problematic. Do you think it will be ok even if I don't thread the collar? Thanks for your help

Also, Craig, why do you say no to ABS?

Let me repeat that IMHO - phenolic will be better for a joint collar.

However, I did a few ABS buttcaps with epoxy nearly 20 years ago
and they are still on the cues.
Just be sure to use the proper procedure for gluing with epoxy.

What was that web site and where was the thread? Links?

ABS is a thermoplastic. Phenolic is a thermosetting plastic. Categorically, thermoplastics are not typically as strong as thermosetting plastics. Are they strong enough for cue building? Probably, but to split hairs, they are still not as strong. They will also provide a slightly different (firmer) feel.

This is in response to "Why say 'no' to ABS?"

Thanks for catching the typo JUSTABANGER. I hope this fixed the confusion. Sorry.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat - an easy typo to make - an easy typo to correct!:)

Thanks

Gary

Thermoplastics will melt with heat and are not reinforced with fibers such as linen, cotton, fiberglass, kevlar, carbon fiber, etc. Thermosetting plastics ARE reinforced with those fabrics. They are typically, but not necessarily, cured with heat. Once cured, they do not change shape if they are subsequently heated. Thermosetting plastics are typically much harder than thermoplastics.

I just feel it is too soft for cuebuilding, but that's just my opinion.

ABS is non-porous. Phenolic is porous. Epoxy bites into porous materials for a better bond.
