Errr somebody please explain how the format takes away BnR's?? So you mean to tell me that if one person breaks and makes a ball they can't runout?? Pift!!!!

After a brake you have to push out regardless of how many balls you make. That
eliminates brake and run.

I just finished watching the whole thing

and a race to 13 (ended at 12 though) took 2 hours and 12 minutes. I don't care for the arena rules, and I sure don't like it ending early if tied at 9,10,11, or 12, what's up with that? So, the opponent pushes after the break, and usually to a spot where the breaker has to shoot another safety, then it just becomes who gets lucky with their kick shot, otherwise they sell out and the opponent runs out.

I say leave 10 ball alone, allow jump cues, and make it call shot. Burford shot 2 one rail banks in the match, and both balls went in on 2 rails. Bustemante had the match won, but hooked himself behind the 10 ball trying to get on the 7 ball, and then he missed a simple kick shot on the 7.
I must say though, the 7 ball Burford had was a tough shot into the side, and he just shot it right in, and got on the 8, and ran the rest out.

Both of them were making balls on the break, I think Burford didn't make a ball but 1 time.

Rather than require push-outs, I'd eliminate them entirely. It's one of the few rules in pool that the general public just can't get their head around. If you don't have a shot at a pocket, shoot a safety or it's ball-in-hand just like the rest of the game. The rules need to be as simple as possible if the game is to get more general viewers.

Alternating breaks bring each player to the table often enough. If his/her skill and luck can't keep him there...well, so be it. We don't need a "must push" just to bring each player to the table for every rack.

The 30 second shot clock was okay but I wonder if we won't see a degradation of the game's strategy over time. Maybe allow three, one-minute timeouts per rack...once you've used those up you're on the 30-second clock.

But in any case even with Arena Rules, pool is not TV-friendly: network programmers have no idea how long a match is going to take; players don't want to stop for commercial breaks; and it's much too sportsmanlike to suit the public's tastes. Where's the trash-talking, endzone dancing and taunting?

Very good points here IMO. Very good post !

So By what I have read here in this thread it is safe to say you like it or you don't.
I understand both sides of it too!

I think half of you want to see the best of rotation competition format all the time. The game you would expect the top players to be playing in the biggest events of all. That's what I normally like too AND if it was ME the BIG EVENTS would be 10-BALL EXPRESS WINNER BREAKS. Use the magic rack.
Maybe with a shot clock of 45 seconds with (3) 15 second extentions.

Breaking 10-ball is much more of a challenge. I can't see soft breaking ever working in 10-ball, do you ? So cancel that arguement

Stringing a few is what the best are suppost to do. So let them do it the hard way.

But that's talking about big events. Tuesday nights match was to entertain viewers in person and watching online. And I thought it was very very entertaining !

The other half of you like the different twist of the format. You can find the entertainment it offers. Drama is almost certain to end with a hill hill situation. Great for an ARENA broadcast and production.

It WAS a great match tuesday night. I hope to see more of them.

Really I got to give BIG THANK YOU to all the people who put these things together because you know what it takes !

Well that's all folks, I'm tired of typing now !

I think if BIG events adopt a new format involving pushing out it would destroy the size of the fields in the long run.
If you take away the bit of luck that the express rules brought in years ago it will separate the playing field.
The 2nd and 3rd tier players will be further from the top and won't be taking a shot at the big time ! You will see the fields shrink and this wouldn't help were pool is now. More participation is vital to the growth of pool.

If you think about it !
It's really not in a bad place IMO.

Ignore all the criticism. Run it again and then run it again. Pay attention to how participation and viewership are trending. Take your cue from that. Everyone knocks McDonald's yet McDonald's really knows what people eat from what they buy.
