Accu-Stats TPA (Total Performance Average)

I decided to try the Accu-Stats TPA system today, for the first time ever.

I played 4 sets of 9-ball, race to 10, with alternate break. (3 breaks each, like on the eurotour). My opponent was multiple Norwegian Woman Champion Ine J. Helvik. We are playing a "challenge-match" for 200 $, race to 5 sets. I gave her 1 set start in handicap, so after tonights first 4 sets I am up 3-2 in score. We will finish the match another day.

I started great by winning the first match 10-1, and had a TPA of exactly 0.900!!! I was so excited that in my next match I didn't play that good, and lost 8-10 and had a TPA of 0.705. Ine played both very smart and good. Many safeties to put me out of stroke + she had 3 Break & runs to take the second match.

The 2 next sets I won 10-7 and 10-8, and had TPAs of 0.815 and 0.832. Total TPA of all 4 matches was 0.801.

18 of my 38 games won was either Break & Run or won on my first visit on the table.

I was so excited about the play today, and that I did well on the first time trying the TPA, so just had to put the scores on here for all to see ;)

What's your highest TPA?

Roy, Im glad you prevailed, but please lets not turn this game into a
smorgasborg of statistics. We allready have, ERA, PPG, RBI's and the grandaddy of all stats, MCHWPISP.(most clutch hits with player's in scoring
position) Hey, somebody wins, somebody loses.... it ain't that hard to
figure out. Or am I just too old to appreciate the "information age".

Could you explain to me how the Accu-Stats formula works or is there a website I could go to to find out? Thank you.

Summary:

Divide balls potted on balls potted + misses/position errors/scratches.

Balls missed, easier than spotshot = 2, harder than spotshot = 1
Break error = 1
Kick error = 1
Safety error = 1
Position error = 1 (if you fail to run out an open table)

so if you have made 63 balls, missed 2 easy balls (4p), 1 foul (1p), and 1 safety error (1p) gives a score of:

63 / (63+6) = 0,913

On videos from US Open the pros are normally ending up between .800 and .950. The US Open final 2007 had both players over 0.925!!! ( I think Alcano had 0.932 and Van Boening .950 something).

Those are some big numbers! You must be one heck of a player.

In the 2007 U.S. Open final, which SVB won 13-10, SVB shot .900 and Ronnie Alcano shot .931.

Nice playin...
And thanks for sharing the nice stats too...

Sounds like it was pretty simple as well for you to do...
Do you think it distracted from your performance to collect the TPA stats while you were playin? Or were you able to remaing fully focused???

Thanks

I have been doing stats on all my matches for almost a year now, practise, gambling and tournaments. I have not been doing it with the accu-stats TPA, but I have kept score of my breaks, break & runs, easy miss and miss because of position and fouls. When I first started with this it helped me with becoming more focused, but sometimes the stats got in my mind, but now I have learned to not think about it.

Today it helped me to be more focused, I think, switching to the TPA. But I did miss 1 very easy ball in the first set, 4th rack, because I was thinking "I am shooting 0.1000 now" :D I just laughed when I missed it, cause it was so stupid :o

Far from my average play, unfortunately... But I WISH I could give the 8 to just about everyone on AZB ;)

You must have someone keep the scores. If I am in tournament play or gambling, my mind is more consumed with other things than what my TPA might happen to be.

That is great shooting, though. I might try this in my practices playing the ghost and see what comes out.

Although I've never taken the initiative to learn or use TPA, I really enjoyed how Accu-stats posted it regularly at BigFoot. That's the 1st time I've seen it rack after rack, albeit they waited to do so until @ 8 - 10 racks in - I guess they needed a large enough "sample size" to make it somewhat meaningful.

Good thread Roy. And good playing!

I just started using it and was pleasantly surprised at how I began to play smarter, simply because I wanted to keep my TPA high.

I'm not entirely sure that I'm scoring things with 100% accuracy, tho.

Anyone pretty familiar with how a professional scorer would treat certain situations?

If you'll identify those situations, I'm sure someone will be able to help you.

One area that involves a little subjectivity is that a miss on a shot that is "easier than a spot shot" counts as two errors instead of one.

Here are the instructions from Accu-Stats on how to calculate the TPA (go to page 5 for definitions of the errors): http://www.accu-stats.com/AS-inst.pdf

That sums up pool and in general gambling on pool in a nutshell.

Russ, that's not typical with Accu-Stats TPA. Usually the player with the higher average wins the match, although in the case you cited here, they both played very well. Any score of .900 or higher represents very strong play. In the 2014 U.S. Open final Shane shot over .950 with Dennis at something around .930! It was a great match, extremely well played on tough equipment.
