Great turn out for this tournament and got to see some great players. Wish it would have been played on the 9-footers instead of the bar tables, though. Also not a lot of action with everyone woofin or knockin each other.

It was nice to finally meet you, Vagabond, though you didn't recognise me at first (LOL), Mike Templeton (albeit briefly), Sarah Rousey, Grady Matthews, along with a few others who are lurking around AZ. Nice to see all my buddies again: Jesse, Justin, George, Denny, Schmitty, Guido, Matt, David, and all my Ohio/Kentucky boys. Got some really weird (read: perverted) questions from the Mississippi group (except Wesley who was the gentleman), but they eased up when Jesse let them know I was his kid sister . Thanks, Little John, for kicking that off.

Is there another threesome running around with those same names? lol Jeff is living in Biloxi now with his new baby (a girl), as well as Matt, who just relocated there a month ago. I think David is living somewhere in that vicinity... I asked them if they always have to be living within a certain mile radius of each other Fletcher wasn't there; he is probably living back in Auburn.

A few of us came from Columbus. None of us got to do anything, though.

The information you want kept secret is reported all over the place. In fact, any IRS agent could get tons of stories about who won what just by walking into any pool room in the country.

So your dad started over - did it legally and probably made more money than ever before with no fear of going to jail for illegal activity.

Just because I say BJ won 4 million from JB last Saturday doesn't mean it's true. Do you want to bet $1000 RIGHT NOW that there will NOT BE one single case of one player mentioned in this forum being investigated by the IRS in the next 12 months becaue of anything said on this board? For one thing, there is not a high rolling pool player alive who couldn't prove that he loses as much as he wins. Secondly, it's all hearsay. Thirdly, pool players are small fish. The IRS has virtually no chance of attaching ownership to anything they have.

But, whatever. For all of you high-rolling pool players try not playing pool for any money with witnesses since you have no idea who they might be.

Sorry about your Dad BJ. Sounds like he did just fine though.

The Service

Okay, they might be reading EVERY post in EVERY forum to see if anyone is talking about getting INCOME. IRS stands for the Internal Revenue Service. Their job is to account for the revenue that is paid to the United States goverment for taxes. Their job is NOT to monitor newsgroups and internet forums for shreds of information about personal income.

You don't know who you are dealing with...

I would think that today's IRS and the FBI have a LOT more to worry about than what is happening with a bunch of pool players.

They, in fact, do have a lot more to worry about...not least of those worries is how to pay for all the spending...

The government has no clue and no way of prosecuting ANYONE based on any hearsay on these forums. If they are monitoring anything then it's for terrorist activity.

Understand...the Service gets its' clue from various sources...this COULD be one of them.
Hearsay is a term used in court, very few cases the Service works actually end up in court. Unlike other agencies, the Service is empowered with the right to audit your tax return AND change it to reflect their opinion based on evidence they consider reliable. This would include the right to determine whether you "must file" and the power of assessment of tax in your absence. That means you owe the money and WILL pay. Only then do you have the right to take it to district court to determine if the evidence is compelling...otherwise (in the absence of full payment), you can take the issue to (the proper jurisdictional) Tax Court while the Service pounds on your head daily...you should be able to guess which one will give you the better odds of winning. And while we're on the subject of winning...I have NEVER met ANYONE who, upon completion of a tiff (large or small) with the Service felt they were a winner.

So, let's not flatter ourselves that anything we talk about here is going to have the man come down on us.

The typical response would be to send an agent or two to a tournament (gathering) to collect information from which "they" might come down on "us". This most likely would not be like the raid the "Texas Rangers" performed in Houston at the 2nd or 3rd Red's Tournament in the early 80"s. I was there when it happened (so were several others who read this forum). There were approximately 15 undercover Rangers in place who had taken the time to target significant gamblers so the when the "bust" went down. All of a sudden these guys came out of their shirts with badges on neckstrings and they grabbed money exposed (they picked their time carefully) and people, on whom they had gathered evidence during their surveillance. One of the guys really surprised me because we arrived for the tournament a couple of days early and he was right there the whole time. Anyway, the money count at the jail never did match up with the money count at the pool hall...surprise...surprise!!

Also, for the record, Professional Gambler is a legitimate profession.

Interesting position...generally it is written something like this..."Gambling is a vice and shall be supressed". But this doesn't mean that these ole boys (at any level) don't want their cut from these legitimate professional earnings. i would agree that "professional pool player" is legitimate but only within the boundaries of tournament play. (see next blurb about reporting gambling income/loss)

In fact, any income can be reported against expenses. So, anything won in Mobile can be reported against all of the expenses incurred and gambling losses previously.

Again, almost right...All gambling winnings must be reported (take note of this because if it is not...that's tax evasaion - potential felony). Gambling losses may be written off as a tier-two itemized deduction subject to a reduction of 2% AGI and an alternative minimum tax (AMT) line item inclusion that obviates the deduction VERY quickly. You can read up on this easily, should you want to know.

In closing, your understanding or belief that the system will or will not do something has prescious little to do with the reality of events.

Just my opinion...you be the judge.

That billiard room was on Broadway wasn't it, Snapshot9? I was stationed on the USS Hamner there in 1966 and played in that same room, I bet. National City "Cow Town" was a blast wasn't it? If a guy couldn't get "Lucky" in Cow Town he looked like the Elephant Man.

No, Scott, I was out of there in Dec. 66 to a ship in Long Beach. It had to have been built after that.
