Starcade Billiards had their Andy Grubbs memorial tournament this past weekend. It was a great event ran on 11 tables with a time schedule. The turn out had 103 top notch players. Two US open winners and a ton of others. The tournament was won by Tony Crosby undefeated. I'll give the run down of the top six below. Anyway, Scotty and Hennesey matched up on Sunday and came out even. They played again on Tuesday for about 15hrs and came out close to the same again. Here's the crazy part. All said and done John and his buddy leave to go to the hotel room, They get there only to get robbed at gun point for a claimed $18k. WOW... It was said by them that when they got to the room the guy was waiting on them. Looks like someone had been watching them the whole time. This is usually a very safe place so I'm really surprised. Kinda makes me never wanna have more then a $20 in my pocket. Apparently they gave a description of the man who held them up and also got the first 3 digits of the license plate. I heard a vehicle was pulled over shortly after they gave the report but I have heard no more about it. I hope in the end it all turns out ok for them. Well, Here's the top six of the tournament here this past weekend.

(Updated)
1.Tony Crosby
2.Richard Broumpton
3.Josh Hillard
4.Scotty Townsend
5.John Schmidt
6.David Broxson
7.Jonathan Hennessee
8.Luther Blades.
9.Mitch Yarborough
10.Jim Jennings
11.James Roberts
12.Mike Wilson
13.Tommy Kennedy

Thanks,
Josh Hillard

That was Jonathan who got robbed, correct?

Which hotel do I need to avoid in the future. Please don't tell me the Hampton. LOL

Joey,

I have been a member here a long time. I'm mostly in the wanted/for sale forum as I sell a lot of cues there. Thanks for the compliment. Say hey next time you see me. Yes, It was Hennessey that got stuck up. The follow up on that is they went to eat and were followed from the waffle house. It had nothing to do with anyone from the pool room. Maybe they were inside speaking loudly of money and the game or flashing the roll and someone heard them. They got back to the room, Went in side to pack up and when they came out it was all over from there. The gun came out and the money was gone.

Thanks,
Josh Hillard

Tony Watson and his stakehorse were robbed of 32 large a few years ago, and guess where it happened? Waffle House.

I don't make it a habit eating at Waffle Houses, but if it were me holding a head of cabbage this size, I wouldn't be carrying it around on my person unless I was in action.

And if I were an action pool player, I would now avoid all Waffle Houses like the plague! :o

Man, brutal. I love waffle house too. :(

I remember back in 1992 I met a very young Tony Watson ( i think he was 14) in Chicago. At the time he was winning big and had a huge knot of money on him. I saw him later in 1995 in North Carolina and when we sat and chatted he told me that when he left Chicago with that fat bankroll, he never made it home. Someone stuck a gun in his mouth he said while other hands proceeded to empty out his pockets. Unless he was robbed twice, maybe thats the 32k JAM is talking about.

Hmmmmm, I Wonder Which Hotel He's Staying In Tonight

Hennesey must have pumped back up. As of this writing, Hennesy is firing balls into the pockets at Planet 9-Ball and awaiting Donnie Mills arrival for some ACTION..... (I'm being told on the phone as I type)
Doug
( they'd better hurry, b/c they close at 3:00 a.m.- have I ever mentioned that I HATE places that Close ) )

Smorg,

When I get back from Iraq, my billiard room will be open for after hours action with prior arrangements. Sweators limited in number, frisked at the door. 9 foot Diamond table, Pro-Cut pockets.

Not sure why Hennesey doesn't make playing arrangments with someone he trusts in the area. He probably does like the crowds, though. Seems like getting robbed would encourage one to prepare somewhat better, though. With the amounts he plays for, methinks a call to the hotel asking them to check his room, as well as provide an escort to/from the parking lot would be smart.

Shoot, if I was playing for THAT amount of jellybeans, you can be damn sure they are gonna have to rob me in the poolhall, cause I sure as s**t ain't gonna get taken at my hotel..

Then again, perhaps spending occasional time in foreign countries where a lot of people consider you a target makes you a bit smarter than the average bear.

Hennesey needs to smarten up, and quick. Letting himself get cornered and robbed is gonna get him killed one day. He's just lucky the robbers this time didn't care whether they left a witness or not.
