Action Story

Last night at our local league, some guys from Virginia "working" in the local area come in and hang out. They say they'll play anybody some $200-$300 sets. I talk with them for a while to try to make a fair game. They say their names are Doug and Wayne.

Though it is a small town league, a few of us have gotten around and seen a few things. Though they didn't fess up until the end of the evening, "Wayne" was Mike Painter of Virginia. We actually figured out who he was because of having seen him gamble at Valley Forge and the US Open. It was funny to hear them justify how he wasn't Mike and simply wanted to play some. Obviously knowing his speed, we were able to create what appeared to be a fair game for our guy.

Mike gave up the 7 ball playing races to 7 for $100. They played 4 sets breaking even on sets. The last set was for $200, so we ended up a $100 down.

Our small town doesn't encounter to many situations like this. Doug Simpson was with Mike. I have to say, these guys were very cordial and though we lost, everybody enjoyed it.

Mike and Doug had some great stories. Mike has obviously been around and played many great players over the years.

Does anyone else have any stories about Mike Painter or similar type players?

I made him hot once. Real hot, and a little poorer too...

I thought he was gonna explode.

we usually never knew the names

A young Johnny Archer passed through in the eighties and wasn't bashful about using his own name. He expected to be recognized but this was before much in the way of TV pool and before internet was widespread, that was the first time I ever heard of him. He didn't say two words extra, all business.

Danny Medina passed through back then too. He used another name and was stalling mightily at first. Just for grins I forced him to win a game or look totally ridiculous. He bent over to break, stood up, and called me over. "Look, you know I'm stalling, I know you are stalling, let's cut the crap and play pool! I'm not who I claim, I'm Danny Medina and I'm a road player." That isn't word for word but pretty close. We settled down to a fierce battle and the most fun I have ever had playing pool. Danny left his name and number and an invite to take a ride with him. Always been a little sorry I didn't but I had a good thing at home.

Others passed through but I never knew their names. I always wonder if it could have been Tom Ferry, Old Has Been, that scouted me for three nights and then decided he would rather talk than play. The guy matched Tom's description and when he decided he didn't want to play he called me over and we talked awhile. He said he traveled the country playing but he never gave a name or I forgot it. Sneaky varmint scouted me for three nights running whoever he was, much more cautious than most road players in a bar.

Tell us more...

He came out of the gate fast, FAST and I made him give me a spot. Hell, I was 4-8? games loser before I even got a decent shot. I decided it was in my best interest to not win and complimented his game, told him I wanted to play more but needed a big spot. we quadrupled the bet, I got the spot and won from there...he was hot.

He wasn't really that good. He was just a little bit better that our league players and I didn't think he wanted to bet high. Dude, if you see him again, tell him to come to Champions or Eddie's and we will give all the action he wants, heh, heh, heh!!

The only story i saw painter involved in was he was at golden cue in Harrisburg in believe...anyway...
A guy from Michigan or somewhere up north came in and was wanting toplay him some sets on the 9'.....painter hee hawed around and told him the only game that he'll get is on the barbox....
So the guy walks by me as him and his backer was going over it and says..." I don't know why this guys wants to play here, it's like playing marbles"...
Well to make a long story short the guy whips mike 2 sets...11-4 11-6...
The bad thing after that was my buddy played mike after and got him for another 400....lol:D
It was a bad day for painter....He is a tremendous player though.

JK (Jason Kirkwood) comes rolling into town with Shorty from MA and their backer. They want action. Now I know we have a little of the worst of it but we decide to put Mr. Park in the box vs. JK for 2k race to 21 ten ball on a 9 foot slop bucket. We also decide to put my other friend in the box vs. Shorty getting the 8 for 1k race 15 9ball my friend is getting the 8 on a tight box.

JK is just not missing a ball, nothing at all. So, Jason is up 17 to 11 and Shin is running out and of course Shin hooks himself behind the 8 playing for the 5. The 8 is just past the spot and the cueball is ridiculously close to the 8. The 5is 5 feet away downtable and straight in relative to the cueball. The six is up against the back rail.

Shin takes out his jump cue, We all look at each other like this guy is out of his mind, because the CB was real close to the 8 and even if he made the ball how was he going to get on the six. Basically there was no future in jumping it. Well Shin takes about twenty practice strokes on the side before he sets up for the shot. He puts his knee on the table and jumps over the 8 hits the 5 on a fly pockets it and draws back for the 6. JK never recovered from that shot as the momentum totally swung in Parks favor. JK missed a 10 ball to get on the hill and Park went on to win 21 to 19. What a great match.

The other match went like this, my friend comes out of the gate flying make it 8 to 2 he is breaking so hard and just getting out. Shorty wins the next game to make it 8 to 3 then proceeds to hit my friend with an absolute perfect 5 pack to tie it at 8. Might have been five of the nicest racks I every seen run. I said we are dead we are way outclassed in this match. All of a sudden Shorty jars a 3 ball at 8 to 8 and my friend hits a gear and beats Shorthy like 15 to 10 or 11, I can't remember. But what I do remember is even though my friend won that night I vowed to steer clear of the man he beat.

Wow...whoever that was must play strong. Like I said, based on talking to Doug and Mike, I would say that Mike has played just about everyone out there at some point or another.
