Adams cues fool a lot of people

Check out this Adams R/A -7 on ebay, being sold as a true rambow. I sent him an email, I wonder how he will react to to it?

Good Catch, the cue is no doubt a Adam's, They do however make great conversion cues, but not for what this guy is asking.

Looks like another fish took the bait, because I do not think this guy is trying to decive anyone, I think that he really just has no clue.

Adams cue & my True Story...

Adams was my first personal cue. An old g/f of mine gave it to me as a Xmass present over 35 years ago. She never told me what it was, where or how she got it.

A few years later, I was sure the cue was either a Rambow or a Balabushka.
So, with cue in hand I drove to Elizabeth, NJ and walked into the Palmer cue store/shop.
There a nice old lady took one look at my cue and said "It's just an Adams cue."

The look on my face felt kinda like Manwon's avatar today.

Hal in Ohio

A sad story

A local old timer came into the poolroom last year and said Nick look at this old full splice cue! I think it is a old custom cue! He got mad when I told him it was a Jap Adams cue and told me I thought I knew everything. Well another friend of mine was there and I asked if he has his 2nd edition blue book. I turned to Adams and showed him the cue. You could have fit a tennis ball in his mouth. He said for 125 did I do well. I said you still got a real sweet deal.

I would never even consider a cue as a Rambow without an inscription and some history.

there are ways to tell from the construction if a cue is a rambow or not.

easy ones actually.

This one sure fooled me (http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=45666). I wouldn't has guessed Adam, but them again, I wasn't quite sure what in the heck it was with the shallow rounded pin. This one on ebay is clearly a first catalog Adam (c.1970), not a Rambow.

MK, I think he just might mean that.....but hopefully not in the negative way it reads. :(

The bump is a dead give away, Rambo's would not have one and the pin is also certainly a Adams pin.

Besides that the Veneer's above the Butt Cap certainly identify this cue as an Adam.

The veneers are wrong

Always outside purple! Never orange inside never green inside. Purple, aqua,Mahogony then maple.
titlist veneer pattern
And Yes that cue ia made in Japan.

Thanks for the correction Chris, I should have stated the color combination of the veneer's of the butt.

I respect this seller for doing this.

Some major give aways here. The veneer colors seem a little off, the inside one being orangish. Concerning the joint, the early Adams joint looks a lot like the Brunswick/Rambow joint. The screw protudes much less on a Rambow and mine is a 5/16X 14 thread, where the Adams is a 5/16 X 18 thread. The Adam joint has thick walls, Rambow thin. It's pretty clear the butt cap is not ivory. A Rambow would be.

This model cue (RA/-7 rambow) was made to resemble hermans work, There is so much to learn about poolcues it could easily fool a novice collecter. Heck I still see helmstetter balabuskas touted as originals on occasion. It must be quite a shock to find out you'r $2500.00 cue is more like a $250.00 cue. OUCH! But at least he's willing to listen and learn, rather than create another innocent victim.
