adapting to saloon noise level

The saga continues. Tonight, I beat a guy & then on his coins, I broke & ran 5 balls. He disappeared & I stood around like a fool until the barmaid pointed out that he was lusting after some scantily clad bimbo.

Other competition came & my concentration succumbed to the huge speaker over the table. I missed a long shot on the 8 & went home & successfully replicated it numerous times in the sanctity of my basement.

I don't know if seeking to overcome the noise challenge will contribute to my development or if it is counterproductive.

Now I know what the medics felt like doing emergency procedures under fire.

I know how you feel. I like quiet when playing too, but to be honest, I've become more patient with background noise and distraction in my old age. :o I used to get annoyed by every little thing around me, but I can safely say that the only thing that bothers me is excessively loud music. And even that doesn't bother me as much as it used to. It could be that I'm more focused now than I used to be.

Still as a competitor, it should be a common courtesy to give your opponent space, quiet, etc. In the old days, if an opponent knew they were distracting and getting to me, they'd just keep it up. Now I just ignore them if they act like a fool.

As far as the loud speaker over the table; yeah, that sucks, but there's not much you can do about it, other than ask someone to turn the music down (which rarely ever happens).

I might get some flack from some bowlers here, but I just wish that tournament venues would realize that amateur pool leagues and amateur bowling leagues are two different beasts. As far as background noise, what works for one, dosen't seem to work for another!

when and if you can . . .

If you can sometimes, crank up the noise in your basement where that is the only distraction you have to deal with. My take on where you want to be is a bit different than Joe's. When I am in the zone, all my senses are heightened and instead of shutting out things I see more and hear more than would seem possible. With your loud music going I might clearly understand a low conversation fifteen or twenty feet away when I can't hear someone talking two feet away when I am not in the zone and having to deal with bad ears and the same noise.

Try to let the music flow through you. Trying to shut it out just makes you notice it more. Accepting it and ignoring it may be the solution. The foam ear plugs would definitely reduce volume and might help you. I find them extremely distracting though.

M,

Become one with the music. Let it be your master and you might find yourself lost in the land of dead stroke.

Works for me (esp LED)on occasion....NO chance with old timey C@W or RAP:sorry:

Thanks. I will continue with the challenge. There is a country song about the guy who shot the juke box. Perhaps he was a pool player.

If you have a table that you can play on whenever. Go ahead and play when your really getting tired. Playing tired is an easy way to lose concentration but if you practice concentrating when you are tired that could also increase your level of concentration.

You might want to start with a cleansing ritual. Circle the table 3 times in a clockwise fashion, chanting for peace and oneness, with a brand of burning sage...... Then imagine all of the evil in the world is contained within the object ball, the cue ball is the epitomy of goodness and light. Use your shaft of justice to ban the evil from the world to the underworld of the ball return...Be the hand of god in your rectangular dominion of felt.

Seriously just tune it all out, the noise, the bodacious tata's the girl is putting in your face (look at them when you're done shooting), the gangsta with the sideways ballcap, droopy drawers and boxer shorts on display, even the drunk with the shit sandwich eating breath who wants to tell you what you're doing wrong (after you beat him 5 straight). Just put your eyes on the green and let the table become everything you see. Drop down into the shot and let the cue do what it wants to do, you are just along for the ride. Alright I'm going to stop now, this is starting to sound like the new age drivel in the first paragraph...
